Why am I so underwhelmed by music these days? (1 Viewer)

Interesting thread. It’s completely understandable to me because my own passion for music doesn’t always remain steady. Sometimes it can be unbearably intense and other times you can be left feeling slightly empty when that intensity wanes.

For me music is important, as it’s a kind of release from the mundane aspect of daily life. It could be that you’ve tried these, but a few of things that helped me keep interested are;

Don’t focus too much on new releases. If a release is good, it will sound just as good years later than the week it came out.
Dig a little deeper. Trying to understand where certain aesthetics in music come from culturally and historically leads to new discoveries.
Make playlists of your favourite tunes that revolve around themes that have meaning for you. Specialise in obscure threads and connections between artists.
Organise a party where you get to choose the music or what musicians get to play.

not necessarily true. Some stuff is throwaway, ephemeral and only likeable in the short-term. There's nothing wrong with that.

Unless your idea of a good time is sitting around listening to the National all day, thinking important thoughts and feeling important feelings exclusively....

True that.

On the other hand I listened to Daydream Nation start to finish for the 1st time in months (it's very long) yesterday and can categorically say that The Ian is totally fucked if he can't get a buzz off tunes anymore. We should start a charity to fly him to america to get some bogus transplant or other so that we the non sufferers can feel better about ourselves.

yeah, this is true but at the same time, the really deadly albums will catch up with you eventually. I am generally at least 5 to 10 years behind the times, if not 15 to 20. I no longer want to listen to shite new albums in the hope of discovering something really exciting and new, and i certainly wont wish to spend money on an album thats two weeks old just because the internet is raving about it. i will give it a few years and if it still seems promising then i will buy it. it'll probably be cheaper then too.

Isn't there an internet is ruining music thread ?

i am in an agreeable mood today so I'm going to jump on Shaneys bandwagon.

I'm also going to throw it out there that now that records don't sell. Alternative leaning rock music is kind of dovetailling with traditional music in a way i.e the live set has more importance. I wouldn't go to any big gigs anymore and get a better buzz off seeing local bands in small venues. Like a local trad set if you get me. It's way better, we should support our locals and burn the O2 who's with me?

I’m 100% convinced, for me music that is likable in the short term has a certain value, but not as much as music that stands the test of time. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with any kind of music, unless it somehow leads to discrimination or violence or something like that.
All I’m saying is that, for me, focusing on the new too much can lead to diminished enjoyment of music as a whole.
Also, I’m not sue what you’re getting at with the National and thinking important thoughts. What has thinking important thoughts and feeling important feelings got to do with the National? Sorry, I may be a little out of touch on that.

haha, actually I really like the National and that's one of the many things about them that bug me

Point is, is when I first head him - It was totally new no me.
Saw some youtube video of him playing a gig in the rain & nearly getting electrocuted. Amazing.
Got the album - amazing. Totally new to me. This is my new this saw I.

Mere months later & I'd forgotten his name.

Too much music, too many options is what it sounds like to me. I have a real thirst for new music all the time but consequently, as its so easy to find new stuff now, I don't get as stuck into albums as I used to when I'd leave a CD in a CD player or walk around all day with only one CD in a discman.

Also have you tried listening to things really loudly?
