Thought a good idea would be to have a thread to laugh at the shit answers people give on that show. First things first though, Jeremy Clarkson is a total cunt.

Now with that said, saw a bit of it earlier and some lad was on like 125 grand and got the question " "3 May. Bistritz. Left Munich at 8.35 p.m" is the opening line from which book?" with options of 'Tinker Tailor', 'Dracula', 'Frankenstein', or some other book that was obviously wrong.
So he thinks about it a bit, doesn't know the answer but of course "Tinker Tailor" is set in the cold war and is about spy stuff apparently, etc etc. He does the 50/50 and gets left with A: Tinker, Tailor or B: Dracula.
Of course this doesn't help much as he still doesn't actually know, but now he's saying "Yeah, it sounds plausible that it would be Tinker, Tailor, but of course Dracula, Mary Shelley (LOL he said that)", but of course this is for a lot of money and he'll lose like 90 grand of it if he's wrong, so he uses his final lifeline, ask the audience.
Audience answer gives 81% say Tinker, Tailor, 19% say Dracula, LOL LOL LOL.
So the lad goes "Well it seemed to me like that would be the logical answer, so I'll go with the audience, Tinker Tailor final answer"

LOL

ha ha ! hard to believe 81 % were wrong in a 50/50.

anyone watch The Chase ?
I was told about a particular episode I want to watch.
basically the contestants are each first given a minutes worth of questions and then based on how many they get correct they receive three different offers of money to take more risk.
so a guy apparently got all these questions wrong and they offered him big money because they thought he was hopeless, he then got all his questions right and put about 40,000-50,000 in the pot.
according to the person who told me about the show he did it deliberately and the Chaser Mark 'The Beast'
was fuming by the end.
they also beat him in the final round and took away big money.

anyone see that episode ? or has this happened other times.

This is reading like one of those reddit threads where people just chat shit into an internet hole. On that note....

The Chase is the only show that I've actually considered applying to. That and University Challenge, but then I'd have to go to Uni.
Never really liked WWTBAM. Too slow.

University Challenge can be hilarious, especially the Xmas celebrity version.
it's amazing the things some of them don't know.

Ardal O'Hanlon got a total score 29 on celebrity Mastermind, his specialized subject
was The Velvet Underground (got one wrong I think).
then got got these ridiculously easy general knowledge questions. BUT due to his
impressive rapid fire answers got about 20 correct !

my fave quiz performance ever was about 20 years ago on 15 to 1
a man answered about 31 questions in total and got the whole lot right.
in the final round he got the first one right and just blitzed it from there.
Legend.

I get very competitive watching UC. I remember jumping out off the couch screaming "1812!!" or "Norman FUCKING Mailer!!", while the flatmates were like "I didn't even understand the question"

There was a dude on Mastermind whose specialist subject was Father Ted. I beat him. Alone in my living room, shouting at the television. My saddest and proudest moment.

remember the Mastermind contestant whose subject was Jim Carrey ?
he got 2 or 3 in the round and it got a lot of coverage in the media.
I honestly thought he was taking the piss watching it.

vague subjects are the best. some I've done well on:

English division one football in the 70's (and 80's)
1980's Indie music
punk rock 1976-82
tour de France

questions about details in novels strike me as some of the most difficult
I never understand why people pick subjects where you need to know that level of detail.

I can get a lot of the science ones in UC, other than the chemistry ones. And the music ones except opera.

UC is on YouTube. There's few enough things that I can watch over here, I watched Queen's Gambit because it was about chess, sometimes you can see the games. They look like legit games too.

Is Clarkson hosting on the BBC? I thought they told him to fuck off.

There's questions about English geography, that I don't bother trying. And there's lots about the classics, which I'd imagine you'd know if you went to a Jesuit school or did an arts degree or something.

I was watching Countdown once and got a 9 letter word, probably the best I'll ever do ha. I actually tend to do okay watching University Challenge due to knowing a fair amount of complete shit. The Chase is a lot more hit and miss, some times you'd know loads of the answers, other times you know fuck all. I think it makes for a better show that way.

There's a way you can usually get close enough with the numbers round on Countdown... which I'm realizing now I've forgotten.

But there's a kind of method that will normally get you close enough. I'm pretty dyslexic so I consider those letter questions unfair, and focus on the music.

I play competitively against University Challenge when I’m watching it. I keep track of whether I get the starter for 10 and only count the bonuses if I got the starter. I can usually beat the runners up, never managed to beat the winning score on my own.

What really impresses me about UC is the breadth of knowledge these kids have at 20, I’m getting these answers right after years of reading around, attending talks, being fully immersed in academic life. They’re like “lol Paganini” after a millisecond of hearing the music or “obviously it’s Euripides” after some mindbender of a question and they’re just out of nappies!

Best quiz moment I've seen was one on live at three in the 80s. Two middle aged women who'd ended up on a quiz to win a car or similar after getting through in some draw. Came down to the last question, which I think was "what is the capital of Romania?'; one of the women leaned on the buzzer and said 'Budapest!' but it was hard to hear with the buzzer noise. Derek Davis said 'I'm sorry, did you say Bucharest?' and she responds 'eh, yes, yes I did' and Davis congratulates her for her win - but the look on the face of the other contestant was amazing.

We did a lot of Zoom quizzes during lockdown, with the missus usually as the quizmaster.

I had a proud quizzing moment when I got the right answer to "In what year was the United Kingdom founded?"

It's contentious, but I said 1801. Everyone else said shit like "1215" of 65BC. Obviously I was the only non-Brit in the group. I offered to host a breakout room to teach them their own history for a bit. No one partook.

So, my Dad went to a fancy Jesuit school, and I can see that they got this very broad grounding in a lot of subjects, particularly the classics, that scotes like me who went to normal state schools just didn't get. And a mate of mine went to one of these very expensive schools and then off to a public boarding school in England, and again they did have a much wider seeming curriculum.

Like, I'm not saying that these schools are better, neither my mate nor my Dad liked them at all, but there's a difference.

Oh yeah, totally. Like the fact that my mate who went to THE ROCK did Latin and I did woodwork says it all. No one ever asks to make a tongue-in-groove joint on University Challenge.
