Glengarry Glenross.

I had a job as a telesales person for about 4 hours once. I went in to the induction they told us we were to sell paper for photocopiers gauranteed to never cause a paper jam they said. Top of the range they said. Competitively priced they said. They told us every dirty trick that you could pull to get them to order the paper including the "you have one a prize" method. Inside I laughed my arse off thinking "who the fuck is going to fall for this?" Then i made my first call. An old dear hard of hearing answered. I felt dirty, but I tried the prize approach I had to know if it could work. I had to play the part of an absolute shyster once in my life, what better method than over the phone ? It worked. She was already to order my weak as shit overpriced bullshit "never cause a paper jam paper" which by the way cost 3 times as much as any other paper out there. I couldn't believe it worked. She was all ready to give me her details when I just couldn't stop laughing. I put the phone down picked up my suit jacket and walked out the door never to return. I went to the pub and stumbled home later to tell my Da. He laughed too.

Not much can be said about this film that hasn't already been said. it's an actors piece really. James Foley moves his camera around a bit, seemingly along the same dolly tracks that Martin Scorsese left around the office he used in After Hours but ultimately it's simply an all star cast acting their balls off. And my oh my how well they do that. The plot, the setting, everything is secondary to the pontificating and philosophising of some angry disgruntled salesmen bitching about their jobs. Everyone here is excellent and the dialogue is sharper than a mouth full of razors being spat at you. The only flaw I can find, and to be fair I had to find something, lest someone get the impression that I'm mellowing. Is that for all the talk of "men" and how they are "men" I mean they're hardly chopping down exploding trees or working as fishermen in the arctic circle. It's telling in a final scene that a "man" replaces Ricky Romas (Pacino) phone. Roma completely ignores him, no thank yous, nothing, "men" sure, deserving of respect sure, but unable to acknowledge another "man" who, guess what ? Who's job is probably shitter than yours Roma. and far worse paid. You cunt Roma. These are dogs out there eating dogs after all and I suppose that's the point. This leads me to the one flaw in the film which is that since the film begins at such a near hysterical pitch there really is nowhere for it to go. As a result it does fly by in what feels like an instant but without time to think or digest anything along the way, it feels - much like Alec Baldwins iconic speech- that you're being berated and battered by the characters rather than fully engaging fully with the deeper issues the men discuss and thus some important engagement with the characters is slightly lost. So when Roma pontificates on one hand about being a man and trying to do his job and then flatly ignores another man trying to do his it slips by without comment without space to allow you judge him and that happens throughout the film, it's so full that as an audience you witness it rather than emerse in it. Still this is a minor issue. No one here is likable anyway. the final act is one of the great conclusions to what is in the end a very simple film. For some reason it really made me want to watch Clerks. Perhaps because I've had that job too, and as much as I bitched about it it was some of the best days of my life.

I'm unemployed right now, I should probably stop watching these types of things before I develop ergophobia.

Rise of the Guardians; a childer's movie - oh for shame - well there's not much on at the minute.

Harmless and heart warming with such mysterious occurances as santa being Russian and Hugh Jackman being some sorta macho bunny...2 d with very nice animation/ use of colour.

7/10

Is this a sequel to The Guardians of Ga'Hoole?

Washingcattle:
but this is Olivia Colmans film she's absolutely perfect as Hannah, that's pretty much as much as I can say she's perfect. She's Daniel Day Lewis (or whatever lofty actor level you wan to choose from) levels of perfect. She should be in every film ever made perfect. She's fucking perfect. The performances are excellent and it's deeply uncomfortable tense and emotional viewing. Highly recomended.

Yes double plus one - I'd known her for bits of comedy - Peep Show etc but I thought she was outstanding in in a seriously depressing and, I'd say, toigh role to bring off. Great fil-um but one I wouldn't want to find myself watching too many times!

OK
Had a kind of The Descent fell about it

Sometimes claustrophobic = a bit cheap - especially when it comes to trying to convey the absolute size of the ship.

The end is good .......but it has elements of a "mad in space" movie and also a monster/zombie film - if they stuck with just the latter it would have been better and a little less all over the shop.

the idea of not remembering much as you wake from hypersleep and having to figure out what was going on was really effective, as was the idea that they had been asleep for almost a thousand years

Though the notion that there were enough resources on a ship with minimal power to keep any amount of people alive for that length of time - or that there were areas of the ship that remained unavailable to the creatures in the course of 100 years, or that any degree of evolution could happen in 100 years (though I think they inserted a line to try and explain this) doesn't stand up to much scrutiny.

documentary about a New York Times fashion photographer who cycles around NY taking photos of people on the street. I really enjoyed it.

Extinction: The G.M.O. Chronicles. Bit like Survivors with mutants. 90% of humanity wiped out by GMO plague, most of survivors are mutants. Handful of ordinary people survive. German production. 5/10.

first time seeing Snake on a Plane. Deadly.

And watched this last night and tonight.
Brilliant stuff. Melancholy sci-fi, multiple realities, mirror existences. Good music. Hot chick.

Django Unchained. Didn't disappoint. Cracking dialogue, great action and excellent performances all around. DiCaprio is on top form here. You can tell he's really relishing the role.

The Hurt Locker. Excellent. Well rounded characters and numerous incredibly tense scenes

I fucking hate that film.
Really really hate it - as odious a piece of propaganda as you are likely to ever see.
A trite, unquestioning glorification of an occupation and the knee jerk "I suppart da trups" that pretends they are all heroes.
It's just Top Gun papered over with a dusting of gritty.
Bullshit military porn.

And if you think otherwise watch the scene in the supermarket - with the insanely loud buzzing fluorescent lights.
