My understanding of Trump is that he's loud, boorish, anti intellectual, a bully, a pathetic phony (and deep down even his biggest supporters know that one), but yeah, intelligent.

He appeals to the most sadistic, racist and anxious about their own masculinity parts of the population. Which appears to be a large proportion of America.

They're not dumb though.

We'll only know with hindsight whether Donald's winning of the nomination was a matter of strategy or luck. It's the kind of thing that really only gets figured out after the election when the people on the inside of the campaign have their say.

It Luck:
The weakest ever field tore itself apart and left him as the last clown in the car.

It's strategy:
Everything as far back as the birth cert nonsense and all of the aborted runs before were in preparation for this time, he destroyed Little Mario early (his only realistic opponent), didn't waste energy on the other minnows and left the GOP with the unpalatable Cruz and himself.

I could be convinced of either at this stage.

He's certainly clever enough to know which buttons to press and realise that he must never back down no matter what he says. Up the ante every time.

The US never seems to be far from mob rule anyway.
In a small way I would be interested to see what Trump would do as president. He thinks he can stomp in there with his macho bullshit, kick in the door of the Whitehouse and do whatever he wants. He won't be able to do that. On the other hand he is an obnoxious, spolit brat, privileged rich kid who has been acting the prick all his life...and getting away with it & I hate seeing people like that get what they want.
