Upcoming Gigs of Interest (5 Viewers)

That Vinyl thing sounds like the most horrific event imaginable. Loads of pompous hasbeens mouthing off ad nauseum. It's almost enough to put you off the bloody things entirely (records that is).

VINYL

May 5-7 2018 (Bank Holiday Weekend)

Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin

ADDITIONAL GUESTS ANNOUNCED
DAY BY DAY BREAKDOWN

The extraordinary reaction to the inaugural appearance of VINYL is testament to the enduring passion of what many regard as the cultural generator of the 20th century. The first announcement of high profile musicians and songwriters, established music industry figures and well-known music fans included Snow Patrol, Shane MacGowan, Chrissie Hynde, Bob Geldof, Tracey Thorn, Sharon Horgan, Stephen Street, Geoff Barrow, Irmin Schmidt, Martin Freeman, Cosey Fanni Tutti, and Billy Bragg.

The next set of exclusive appearances at VINYL are equally exciting. Kevin Shields will discuss the pioneering legacy of My Bloody Valentine and the band’s forthcoming album, whilst renowned record producer Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave) will be in conversation with celebrated actor Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Dunkirk). Brix Smith Start will be talking with Manchester DJ, writer and broadcaster Dave Haslam about her former husband, Mark E. Smith, and her days in iconic punk band, The Fall. Co-founding member of The Cure, Lol Tolhurst, will outline his relationship with Robert Smith, as well as discuss The Cure’s landmark 1982 album, Pornography. Veteran songwriter and musician Donovan will chat about a life in music, including his relationship with The Beatles and the timeless appeal of songs such as Mellow Yellow and Hurdy Gurdy Man. The fascinating (and unexplored) history of Irish vinyl will be methodically outlined by Philip King, the man behind the lauded television series, Other Voices. The Stunning’s Steve and Joe Wall will describe how to sustain a music career, as well as talk about the 25th anniversary of their album, Once Around The World. Irmin Schmidt, a true pioneer of ambient and experimental music, will discuss the history and legacy of Can with the writer Rob Young (Electric Eden: Unearthing Britain’s Visionary Music). Damian O’Neill and Michael Bradley of The Undertones will be reflecting on over 40 years of the band and their classic pop/punk songs, including the eternally brilliant Teenage Kicks. Berlin-based Victor Van Vugt (The Fall, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave) will chart his production practices as well as chat about the artists he has worked with. Commended rock music photographer Chalkie Davies will discuss his remarkable work for the NME and The Face. Also talking about The Face will be Paul Gorman, author of The Story Of The Face, the history of the iconic pop culture magazine.

Music at VINYL will feature the best of new and established Irish talent. Musicians and songwriters performing will include August Wells, Cathy Davey, Seamus Fogarty, Hedge Schools, David Keenan, Malojian, Brigid Mae Power, Ailbhe Reddy, Them There, and Trouble Pilgrims.

Exclusive exhibitions at VINYL will include James Lavelle’s ‘Daydreaming With UNKLE’, Vaughan Oliver’s ‘Walking Backwards’, Peter Boettcher’s ‘Photographing Kraftwerk', Stephen Averill’s ‘Death Valley 86’, ‘The X-Ray Audio Project’, and Rory Gallagher’s vinyl collection as assembled by the guitarist’s brother, Donal.
Designers in conversation about their groundbreaking work at VINYL include Russell Mills (Nine Inch Nails, David Sylvian), Malcolm Garrett (Buzzcocks, Magazine, Duran Duran), Vaughan Oliver (The Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, Pixies), and Rick Banks (his book, Clubbed, a graphic history of the UK nightclub).
Across the three days of VINYL there will be a Tower Records pop-up store stocked with the back catalogues of our various attendees along with hard-to-source special editions and books. Also, long established Irish hi-fi store, Cloney Audio, will be onsite showcasing their specialist audiophile systems.
VINYL is an immersive theatre of the mind that insightfully celebrates the rich history and enduring legacy of vinyl, its landmark recordings, key personnel, and the groundbreaking labels and studios that cultivated such talent. VINYL will feature specially programmed talks, panel discussions, curated collections, music performances, album playbacks, art exhibits, pop-up stores, signings, and equipment showcases. The various events will each make special use of the RHK's expansive grounds and infrastructure, from the magnificent Great Hall and Baroque Chapel to its cloistered, cobblestone courtyard.

The first festival of its kind anywhere in the world, VINYL will present the people who made the records that would define not just a number of eras but also their respective cultures. It runs from Saturday, 5 May to Monday, 7 May, and will take place in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin. Further additions to VINYL will be announced shortly.
