Ah lads, have you seen Summer of Soul? Gladys Knight and the Pips are such a highlight in it, only a clip online it seems

SO much to enjoy in that! The guy up front with the coolie hat doing air guitar, the horse riding, the hippie dance moves, the lad smoking a fag up against the Marshall stacks at the end like its any old day.

The alternate verse really took me by surprise there. I presume you’ve seen the Old Grey Whistle Test performance too? The fast but at the end where Byrne switches guitar is fantastic, serious Neu! vibes.

This is really good but one fatal flaw - David Thomas doesn’t seem to do the “looking into…” climax at the end. Blasts along though!

I was on a wee Glen Gould dig the other night

the top comment - which is mildly debated in the further comments but not too far from the truth by the loooks of it:

In 1970, when Italian pianist, Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli, was unable to carry out his scheduled performance of Beethoven’s Concerto No.5, Emperor, in Toronto, Gould was given a telephone call the night before the concert, and asked if he could come in and play it the next morning, with the Toronto Symphony and the conductor, Karel Ančerl, as a substitute for Michelangeli. Gould’s answer was positive, and he rehearsed the Concerto, which he had not played since he recorded it with Leopoldo Stokowski and American Symphony Orchestra in 1966, overnight. The concert was recorded for TV as planned, and aired on December 9, 1970, and not on September 12, 1970, as originally mentioned. As can be seen and heard here, Gould and the orchestra played Beethoven’s Concerto flawlessly.

His playing just mind blowing.

Oh also - from the high panning shot just after 3.30 you can see he is playing it from memory, no sheets.

some of this concert was on the Live (X Cert) LP.
great version on Yukio with the proper ending. they were really at their best around the time of Black and White.
the women being cautioned by the police at the end would be the strippers who along with JJ Burnel got undressed on stage. One of them was Burnel's girlfriend.
EMI once posted this film on youtube and didn't bother removing the nude parts.

I think this is the earliest footage there is of a full song by Bolan and Took. Can't tell if it's a studio or just a gig or what but manic pixie bongo music anyway

Imagine seeing this just before Fairport Convention or Pink Floyd!
