Ultimate insult to Hot Chocolate though is the woman just reading a book at the end of that performance

the professionalism of it, making sure they get it right

No effing and jeffing, clear diction, not like the mumbling potty mouth of the lil Waynes and Billy Elishises of today

Hot Chocolate going off on one on tv in the early 70s, fucking amazing

Surprised at the range of reactions on that post and that not every one’s a winner.

there's a monster of a jump from the studio version to the live version.

The Old Grey Whistle Test version of this song is canon for me. They are unbelievably tight, the BBC guys really miked everything up nicely. Class stuff.

edit - also Bunny is just fucking killing it here.

It's mad how like every band that went on the Old Grey Whistle must have just been like "Right, let's fucking nail it for this show"
"The OGWT was live and went out live, I remember that one. We opened the show, I had all the guitars nicely tuned and 30 seconds before the Whistle Test title sequence they turned on the air conditioning because of the studio lights. Not sure if you know much about guitars but they dont like sudden changes in temp, so Paddy's guitar went out of tune and there was nothing I could do about it with a few million people looking on"

Still sounds pretty good, all things considered

I wonder when they stopped miming. I have a feeling some of those great clips aren't as "live" as they appear

"Due to the lack of technology that accommodated live performances, bands mimed to tracks in early episodes.[6]"

On TOTP until about the early 80's the artists were supposed to re-record the songs on the day at the BBC
but usually they only did it in a token way (maybe just the vocals or something) then mime the song on camera.
this was due to outdated Musician's Union rules to make sure their members had work.
also in 1980 the BBC got rid of several orchestras inc the TOTP one who were all but redundant for years at that stage. they also came tried to limit the use of synths at the time afraid they would put their members out a job!

the tradition of recording radio sessions on British radio was also due to Union rules to make sure musician's had a regular work. but the problem was DJ had limited 'needle time' i.e. they only had a certain amount time to play records but specially recorded sessions had to take up a big minority of the airtime.

and there were other silly Union rules like that.

the first Prefab Sprout single sounds about the mark of The Go-Betweens or Postcard records.
