Well overdue a thread by now, protestors appear to have retaken the square again after police occupied a section of it Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Protestors claim up to 17 are dead after clashes with police while state media is saying weapons and ammunition were stolen in Lviv before transport to Kiev where they are being used against the police. Other reports have military being moved into Kiev, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them used against protestors if things continue as they are, given the inability of the police to control things its surprising they haven't deployed the military prior to this.
American/EU calls for dialogue seem absurd and extremely hypocritical, I can imagine the response were protestors to occupy the centre of a major European/US city and effectively declare war on the police and government.

What next? It doesnt look like Yanukovich is going anywhere and the protestors don't seem to be able to extend far beyond the Maidan, sanctions from the EU/America will likely just drive the regime further to the Russian side and Russia for its part would probably be happy to assist. If the army do show up I can only see it escalating with many further deaths.
Interesting times.

Putin is as Putin does.

After the Georgian war of '08 the west should really have known that Russia wouldn't stand for a state that is so vital to their national interest siding with the Atlantic alliance. That's not to say what Russia is doing is right but it is right for Russia and so here we are.

Interesting discussion on Democracy Now about Ukraine today, they had another interesting discussion earlier in the week

There is no such thing in existence as an "atlantic alliance" The Ukraine boarders with allot of European country's so its only natural that they should have trade with them it seems the whole dispute seems to be about trade and commerce.

Is this the whaddyagonnado? Vlad-being-Vlad defence?

There's already large trade volumes between Ukraine and the EU, the EU as a bloc outdoes Russia in both imports/exports to/from Ukraine. The EaP aimed to further expand this trade and, more importantly from the Russian point of view, was aimed at "deepening....political co-operation". Ukraine is vital to the Russian sense of security and obviously enough Russia would much rather an eastern looking Ukraine to one that is allied with the 'west'. Russias belligerent response to a western leaning Ukraine was absolutely predictable, if the EU and US didn't see it coming they are either deluded or just plain silly.

The human side of war. Thoroughly depressing.
