The Lowlands of Holland mp3
(Feat. Sharron Kraus & Allison O'Donnell)

"A cornucopia of sonic delights, traversing the spectrum from delicate folk to sprawling progressive rock. Richard Youngs' progressive rock project Ilk provided the impetus for the band to make a "Prog Album" so they started with the everything-but-the-kitchen- sink opus "The Jonah". Running the gamut from delicate acoustic guitar to Sunn 0))) style doom metal & back again, it's an extraordinary feat of the imagination. Around this central track, a range of shorter tracks orbit, typically acoustic or folk-rock in nature with occasional experimental flourishes, they are characterized by glorious melodies & arrangements and a peerless array of guests. Current 93's Richard Moult provides synth & very David Tibet like vocals to opener "The Swallowing", and help out with the space folk piece "A for Andromeda". Ex Mellow Candle singer Allison O'Donnell provides vocals for several tracks, as does Sharron Kraus."
Originally formed as a duo with an unhealthy desire to emulate the incredible string band, UBS quickly evolved into a collective and laid the groundwork for the deserted village label and events. Since their formation in winter 2001 they have played and recorded sporadically-never settling on one recording method, never settling on one line-up.
"The Shore that Fears the Sea" album shows a love of the unadorned beauty of Shirley Collins, Anne Briggs and Vashti Bunyan as well as the work of Current 93, Coil and Sol Invictus. Sparse folk sidles up to a more melodic take on free improv and tales of loss and pagan longing abound. If they could exist anywhere, they would be playing in the green man when Sergeant Howie arrives.
Since their sun worship ritual at The Mór Festival in 2003, the students have increased their activities. The set, which included radical reworkings of of some of their quiet new folk songs has been edging towards a more Pharoah Sanders/ Emperor/ Can hybrid thanks to the new drums and horns helping them to blaze brighter in the northern skye. Live shows throughout Ireland and Britain and most recently the USA (Including Terrastock '08) have seen them wildly improvise with up to twelve members or play straight trad as a trio. Their philosophy is that all paths are equal, all approaches relevant.

JOZEF VAN WISSEM
When Jozef Van Wissem played Dublin for the first time in 2007 it was with UBS and Cian Nugent. His Incunabulum label co-released the set Cian played that night and now he will be recording an album with UBS when he is in Dublin.
"Composer-lute player Jozef Van Wissem is renowned for his unusual approach of the Renaissance and Baroque lute. He cuts and pastes classical pieces, reverses melodies, adds electronics and processed field recordings made at airport lounges and train stations. creating an unheard amalgam of contemporary folk and late Renaissance music. Although Van Wissem uses subtle electronic sound manipulation, he has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute. He also composes his own pieces for lute, using palindromes and mirrored structures. His music therefore does not have a traditional linear progression, nor leads to a climax, it rather stays on the same level of intensity. His music is quiet and not so much demands concentrated listening, as it will bring the listener in a state of concentrated listening. Van Wissem runs the Incunabulum record label, and performs extensively around the world. He has worked with Tetuzi Akiyama, Maurizio Bianchi and James Blackshaw. With Blackshaw he has formed Brethren of the Free Spirit ( Important Records)

HYPNOTIC MINIMALIST FIGURES SEEM TO BREEZE ACROSS MUSICAL BOUNDARIES WITH EFFORTLESS FLUENCY' _PITCHFORK
“Jozef van Wissem has been slowly reinventing the lute for the last three decades. Among the slew of fast-picking, fancy-fretting guitar players so prevalent today, his lute’s voice is a quiet oasis, and Stations of the Cross a small masterpiece”. The Wire

BOYS OF SUMMER
A duo of Andrew Fogarty (Toymonger, Weil Rats) and Ivan Pawle (Sea Dog, UBS, Scented Candle) who have recently been playing with Paul G Smyth (The Jimmy Cake). They play analogue synths and are, at times, reminiscent of Tangerine Dream but traverse much darker territory.

CIAN NUGENT

Talented young guitar player Cian Nugent plays instrumental guitar music with many folk and experimental influences. His exploratory style of playing has earned him comparisons to Robbie Basho and John Fahey. Recently he has toured with Jozef VanWissen and James Blackshaw and will feature on an upcoming compilation from legendary folk label Tompkins Square.
