Two men held over US airplane protest at Shannon
September 4, 2002
(14:33) Two men are in custody at Shannon Garda Station after anti-war graffiti signs were found on a US military plane parked at Shannon Airport.
A 22-year-old man from Wexford and a 27-year-old man from Limerick city, were arrested by airport police at around 5am today.
They had been discovered painting slogans on a US Hercules military aircraft which had been parked at the airport since yesterday.
Gardaí are still trying to establish how the men managed to gain access to the airport. It is believed they may have scaled the perimeter fence.
They have been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and are being questioned about criminal damage to the aircraft.
Gardaí are seeking the advice from the DPP to see if they will be brought before court later today.
Aer Rianta say they are carrying out an immediate investigation into the incident.
They said that they would be looking at their security arrangements and investigating all aspects of the incident to try to ensure it did not happen again.
According to an Aer Rianta spokesperson, the airport police patrol the airport around the clock and carry out regular patrols on the three miles of perimeter fence which surrounds Shannon Airport.
Reacting to this morning's incident, Edward Horgan, a member of the Executive of the Peace and Neutrality Alliance, said that while they did not condone illegal action, the group understood those who undertook this type of action.
Mr Horgan, who knows the two men involved, said that they were frustrated with the Government over the use of Shannon airport by US military aircraft, which they say is in breach of our neutrality.
