Trigger Warning (2 Viewers)

Where i worked last year it was just part of the general lexicon of a few of the younger (not that young) activists. Sometimes it made sense, sometimes it was just being a bit too kid gloves, i thought.

One thing that bugs me is when someone links to an article, and it's completely obvious what the subject matter is, because it's in the headline, and yet they still feel the need to stick a "TW" in.

Aren't they infantilising though? I think debilitating flashbacks are at the extreme end of the spectrum and, while many will develop some type of PTSD over their lives it's usually minor and so should be dealt with through (slow if necessary) acclimatisation to the stressing object rather than absolute avoidance.

Your cold hard logic is triggering me you monster

But I've never really felt unsafe my whole life (white, cis-male, middle class, straight)
Really? Hasn't anyone ever started on you? I'm white, cis-male, middle class and straight and have felt (and been) unsafe plenty of times

... not recently mind - these days I'm too old to be perceived as a threat/rival by young bucks, and not old enough to be obviously weak

(edit: and too shabby-looking to be worth mugging)

I'm 6'4" and 200+ lbs. I have never had a problem going anywhere.
If I went back to my teen years I could maybe remember something.

Wait, I had a gun to my head in a robbery. That was scary.

We're talking about a talk about rape culture and sexual assault. Yes the description of the safe space may sound silly, but if there's any issue where we should be respectful and go above and beyond to alleviate what people are triggered by its this.

Ever been in a real fight?

Isn't this sort of stuff (the idea of rape culture) to do with the increased reportage of such issues? 20 years ago we likely would not have heard of many of these cases whereas in todays world we can find plenty of information to support/reinforce a given view.

More people feeling confident enough to report sexual assault is surely a good thing?

And hasn't the culture for men changed with complete access to every type of pornography for everyone over 12?

Sorry, by reportage I meant media reportage. Absolutely, increased reportage to the authorities is a good thing.
On pornography, does it lead to increased numbers of sexual assaults? From memory I can recall their being conflicting reports.

I really have no good information on which way the numbers are headed.
I'd be more concerned/interested that there seems to be a general pushback and closing ranks at institutions when the problem is highlighted.
And a widespread cultural/media desire to debunk rather than engage with something that affects a lot of people.

This 'puppies and cookies' stuff as well as the UVA story and stories like that seems to fit with a narrative that it's all some grand overreaction on behalf of permanently outraged feminists, which I have a hard time buying.

FBI figures have them on a steady downward slope from 1991 through 2010. Of course it may be that figures have since increased but we'd need to wait at least five more years to see if there is an overall upward trend that justifies the tag 'rape culture'.
And yeah, institutions shouldn't be covering things up but that's what institutions do unfortunately, we only have to look at the Catholic church to see that. (Why is it that a lot of these cases seem to be left to college authorities? Crimes as serious as rape should surely go straight to the local police department)
The debunking seems to come from a certain section of the media/cultural group, there's equally other media/groups highlighting the issues. It's essentially (IMO anyway) a continuation of the Culture Wars, just a lot dirtier.
What's the Puppies and Cookies thing?

As far as I can see that would only be because it's being constantly questioned and called out.

As above, the decline dates back to the 90s, its only in recent years that this has become a hot topic so, while it may help, I'm not so sure it's the determining factor.
