The Whatmans-Today Indie Ireland, Tomorrow the World

The Whatmans, Ireland's latest rock sensation, were crowned winners of the Indie Week Ireland 2010 competition at the Twister Pepper club in Dublin last week.

The prestigious award, which carries with it the honour of representing Ireland at the Indie Week Canada 2010 Showcase event, in Toronto during October, came after a week of intense competition against fine bands from Dublin, Cork, Belfast and Galway.

The Whatmans were announced as the winners at the Twisted Pepper on Friday, April 16. Playing their forthcoming single Kiss the Mind and current single Devil Shoes in the final showdown, The Whatmans took the title ahead of the other finalists, Amoric.

“We always knew that there was no other band out there in Ireland like us. Getting to play at Indie Week Ireland was such an amazing chance to show off our talent to the music industry in Ireland, but to win the competition was a dream come true,Hopefully the radio will take notice and play devil shoes, its heartbreaking to play in front of 2-3 hundred people and they say they never heard of you” said lead singer John Brennan following the announcement.

The band have a busy schedule ahead of them, including an appearance on the Hector and Tommy Show on RTE 2 on Saturday, May 1.

Over the summer, The Whatmans are appearing at festivals in Cavan, Sligo and Northern Ireland. They also travel to Britain for the UK's biggest indie festival, where there will be supporting the legendary New Model Army.

If you want to catch the Whatmans’ live experience before they become international superstars, they are playing in The Ulesses Venue Middle Abbey street next Thursday at 10 pm and they are appearing in the Backroom Sessions in The Lantern Bar in Navan at the end of May.

The Whatmans go into the studio in June to finish off their next single, before returning to the the studio again in late July to complete recording on their forthcoming album(provisionally called -Our driver has no criminal record), which is due for release in November. The Band will also spend the Summer shooting 2 videos for the Album, which will include a 14 minute video for the Song "Solider".The band are also finalising a 20 minute short Documentary called "who the Fxxk are the Whatmans" which is also planned for release throughout indie film festivals during the year

The Whatmans are singer John Brennan, guitarist Padar Mulvey, bass player Francis McGinn keyboard player Lizzy Oakes and drummer Aidan Carolan. The band formed in 2007 and they have described as What the Kings of Leon would sound like on Cocaine and Ireland,s best unsigned band.

well done the Whatmans. Truly they are well on their way to becoming the Seamus Heaney of the Irish music and general entertainment category scene

ok Peps,

I will accept any negitave comments from people whohave actually seen the band live,

I accept the annoyance at our self promotion, the content of or releases, but that is what we have to do.

I am sorry to annoy and dont mean to.

I do think its only fair to have a informed critisim, which we will accept, and to be fair we will listen to all critisims, we have to learn to grow.

Sorry all, but we are really really good-and if that offends it shouldnt, thats our opinion and 7000 plays in one month of 1 song on our myspace page indicates that some people do like our music.

each to his/ her own

When you join a forum or 'community' and every single post is yet another ad for your band you've got to accept some flak

It's like that other person who keeps whoring their clothes shop and doesn't participate in anything else

There's a certain decorum, for want of a better word, yes, even on Thumped that these kinds of threads piss all over
