The Walkmen* are an [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_rock"]indie rock[/ame] band from [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City"]New York City[/ame]. The band formed in 2000 with three members from Jonathan Fire*EaterPaul Maroon (guitar, piano), Walter Martin (organ/bass), and Matt Barrick (drums)and two from The Recoys, Peter Bauer (bass/organ) and Hamilton Leithauser (vocals, guitar). All but Bauer attended St. Albans in Washington, D.C.

They prefer the sound of vintage musical instruments, particularly the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upright_piano"]upright piano[/ame], and have often recorded at Marcata Recording, a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recording_studio"]recording studio[/ame] built in Harlem in 1999 by the three former members of Jonathan Fire*Eater and later relocated to [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upstate_New_York"]upstate New York[/ame]
The 2002 debut album [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everyone_Who_Pretended_to_Like_Me_Is_Gone"]Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone[/ame], released by the independent record label Startime, was well received by critics. The follow up album, Bows + Arrows, was released on the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Record_Collection"]Record Collection[/ame] label in 2004 and was listed by many critics as one of the year's best albums.

Their next album, [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Hundred_Miles_Off"]A Hundred Miles Off[/ame], was released in the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States"]U.S.[/ame] on [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_23"]May 23[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006"]2006[/ame]. The band premiered most of the new songs on a tour of the Northeast in early 2006. The first single to be released was "Louisiana." Peter Bauer and Walter Martin traded [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_instrument"]musical instruments[/ame] on the new album with Bauer handling the organ duties and Martin playing bass. The same year, they released another full-length album: "Pussy Cats" Starring the Walkmen, a track-by-track cover of [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Nilsson"]Harry Nilsson[/ame] and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon"]John Lennon[/ame]'s 1974 album [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy_Cats"]Pussy Cats[/ame], recorded as a farewell to their studio's Harlem location.

Their most recent studio album, You & Me, became available July 29, 2008, in an exclusive charitable pre-release on indie music website [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amie_Street"]Amie Street[/ame]. The Walkmen made their album available for [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_dollar"]US$[/ame]5 at AmieStreet.com/thewalkmen, with all the proceeds from each sale being donated to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. During its first week of sales, the album charted at #29 on Billboard's [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_charts"]Top Digital Albums[/ame]. The album was made available on physical formats on [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_19"]August 19[/ame], [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008"]2008[/ame].
