Cars I have owned:
Fiat Uno - No power steering, like driving a bus.
Honda City - Jap import, small car, massive wheels, great on corners, got totalled by a stolen car when parked outside the house one night. Think that episode of Father Ted.
Opel Astra - saloon with a roofrack, was always getting mistaken for a taxi when driving past McGowans.
Mazda 323 - great car but the dog got sick in it after eating a chip pan full of grease and it was never the same after that. Thankfully it got robbed and was written off.
Ford Escort Estate - heap of shite, ate petrol
VW Passat Estate - like driving a tank, started taking on water after a couple of years and there were mushrooms growing in it.
BMW X3 - lost custody of this
VW Golf - great little yoke, it's fourteen years old and has cruise control and lots of other fancy things in it. And it cost fuck all.

@Unknown Convict and @therealjohnny thank you!!! I will let you know how I get on. And @ann post I don't think you can get more grown up than a 1983 Mini, can you? It's 35 years old, just like me :), and @pete you always ask the right questions  and @Diddles those are lots of cars - but I am very late to this driving lark, so I wanted my first car to be my Dad's first car :giggle: and it ballpark is, I just need to get it insured!

Previous to the Skoda I had (in reverse order):
Audi A5: The best thing I have ever driven. We reluctantly got rid of it as we couldn’t get a toddler-sized car seat in the back.
VW Polo: I got 8 years out of this and drove it into little pieces. Used to do weekly runs to Derry and back, drove across France and Italy, was a general runaround and had the best stereo.
Mazda Demio: Inherited from my granny when she stopped driving. It had wheels and some kind of engine. Other than that, I have nothing neutral or better to say about it. It did get me around and was a gift from my gran so I was grateful for it but from any of you who played the original Gran Turismo on PS1: this was your starter car that handled like a breezeblock.

Mini city 91. 998 Litre. My first car that I got when I was in my early thirties. Began my love/hate relationship with minis. Got it for 2000 at the time of the SSA schem and put thousands more itno it over the few years I had it. Ended up getting scrapped after losing a round of demolition derby to an 18 Wheeler on the M50.
Opel Vectra. 1.6 litre engine. I was given it by a family member after the mini incident. Might have once been a good car but by the time I got it the steering was fucked and it would shake like a spaceship entering the atmosphere if you hit 60 mph. Spent a fortune trying to fix things but in the end sold it for scrap for a 100 euro.
Subaru Vivio. Great little car. 660 litre engine (VI,VI,O). Very basic but did everything a car should. Spun into a ditch on a frosty bog road in Donegal one night but the rear wheel drive allowed me to get out again. It was a little banged up. I knew I need to replace it when the security at work reported it as "possibly abandoned".
Mini Cooper 96. 2.75 Litre. I love it but it has cost a fucking fortune to keep it going. I'm getting the paint detailed and will sell in the new year. I don't get to drive anymore since I got..
Renault Kangoo. Perfect for country living. I take the dogs out in every day. Use it for collecting fuel, trips to the dump, etc. They have a mixed rep but so far it seems ok . I've had it in the garage twice in a year and each time was 350 quid. After minis I don't know if that's normal.

I blew up my Renault Kangoos engine ..absolutely gutted. I think someone definitely not me had been running it on kero, Up until the explosion it was a great little van and cheap for parts!

Currently have a 2001 Daewoo Lanos that I got for €250 with only 48000 on the clock and flew through its NCT.Great little car.Eats the juice though but its nippy..I'm a hot hatch boy from here on out though

I used to have a Volvo estate years ago.Ate the juice.Parts were hella pricey too. Id never get another Volvo .. parts are too dear .

Had a Fiesta.Was a deadly yoke.Cheap parts

Renault Clio..another deadly little yoke that just gave up after been driven without a back window for 9 months ..and I wouldnt mind but the parts were cheap but I was too distracted to replace it

You've all had so many cars!! Because I was relatively late to driving and sentimental - I was holding out for the right Mini - but now I am a little worried that no-one will insure me - though will talk to Sheridans and also that the Mini might cost me a lot of money I don't have! I am always on the bicycle normally, but this was a long-held dream, hopefully it won't resemble a Lynchian dream

Peugeot 306 estate 1.4 (2000). Drove very nice but retrospectively unreliable. Drove it into something. Engine was a little outdated and always trying to catch up with the car. Bought for 2500, got the money back (technically) as insurance.
Nissan Primera Estate 1.6 (1999). Bigger than the pug, smelled weird, burned a lot of petrol. Wonderful engine. Bough for 650, sold for 200. Apparently is still spotted occasionally by a mate.
Toyota Yaris 1.0. (2000). Bought for 1800, still have it. Best car i've owned so far. Almost no repairs in 4-5 years (one alternator belt and cosmetics), have racked up almost 80,000 miles on it now. I'm driving it till it passes 200000 and then its going to the crusher. Slightly started to burn oil, I don't think it would be only I'd no money one year and couldn't afford services so I drove without an oil change for 22,000 miles, fully expecting to kill it. That was two years ago. Still does 48mpg. I gave howard marks a lift in it once. Recommend these up until they went from 4 cylinder to 3.

I dream of owning a 20 year old Corrolla with low mileage ..preferably the two door..cos I'm a hot hatch boy

I'd love to live in a country where every aspect of owning car wasn't so damn expensive. I'd keep my mini for "leisure" and use the van for every day stuff , and I'd enjoy not having to face the grueling task of ringing around for slightly less extortionate insurance every year.

1. 1980 Mini
Great first car. Ended up being in the garage far too much and neither of us are petrol heads so we sold it for £100. It has since been done up beautifully.

2. Opel 1990 the car that they replaced with the Astra. Great yoke, bought it from Ross from Joan Of Arse. I had a few alternator related stories from that one.

3. 1992 Astra Estate. Loved this car, drove all over the country gigging with it. I still have a massive gra for Astra Estates.

4. 2003 Ford Galaxy. First grown up car, cost a whopping €21k. A beast. I loved so much about this but it also broke my heart. I drove the hell out of it. Sold it late 2017 for €500

5. Current car. 2012 Toyota Avensis Estate. There's loads of little things I don't like about it, the position of the USB input, the speakers are weirdly positioned, the seat is too low. But it drives excellently. Happy with it. Bought it "up north" and cost 10k all in.

Related: I got a lift in a new Skoda Kodiaq today. It was unreal. It didn't even feel like a car. It was like a whole new traveling experience. I have nothing to compare it to.

Skodas are class. My Da has one from 2010 still like brand new

I’d get another swish Audi if we had the money and use for a second car but I think it will be Skodas forever. So nice to drive, fancy enough to feel comfortable enough for long drives and not mad money to buy/run.

I bought our estate based on the fact that all the Tour de France teams use them so:
a) They’re reliable.
b) They’re easy to drive.
c) They can pack loads of crap into them.
d) They look deadly with bikes strapped to them.
