now as many of you know there's going to be a postal strike everywhere but dublin (doesn't affect that many of you i know but)

my opinion is whats the point of a postal strike everywhere but dublin. look at it from the point of view of where the party leaders are situated, ahern - dublin, quinn - dublin, harney - dublin, sergeant - dublin, joe higgins (socialist party for those of you who don't know who he is or those who thought he was an independent - originally a kerry man but represents the constituency of dublin west and is a member of fingal county council (scary the amount i know about joe higgins while most people don't even know ireland has a socialist party :D)

the only 2 parties who's parliamentary party leaders are from outside dublin are Sinn Fein and FG and lets face it no one cares or listens to what FG or SF (note, caomighin o'caoilin is the sinn fein parliaqmentary party leader and he is a monaghan man *shivers*)

anyway the two major parties (pd's and ff's) leaders are situated in the dublin area so i believe it would make greater sense to make it a universal strike taking in all of ireland

it would be more successful as it would bring the main place and the place which holds 33% of the population and lets face it an upper hand in political matters to a standstill, the strike will be more effective , am i wrong?

Yep, completely agree with you. Not only the political centre of the country, its also the business centre, all the businesses operate out of there. Do some districts have two deliveries a day even? If you cut that service out then they'll put pressure on the politicians to sort it out sooner. A non-Dublin strike wont do enough IMO.

If this was carried out about three or four months ago, a nationwide strike would have been really effective. Constituency politics and all that.

I'm making a prediction here:

Fianna Fail have two years left in government

yeah your right with the 3 months earlier thing. that way the govt would have been forced to make a quick settlement with them and if not, it woul.d be bad for the outgoing govt.

where as now, it doesn't really matter to the govt as the next election is about 4 and a half years away

However, i don't agree that FF have 2 years at most. i believe that D's will not withdraw their support of a FF/PD coalition as that would either bring about the starting of a new coalition govt for the rest of the term or a general election

FF would be in the best position to form a new coalition gvot as they have i think 80 seats in the dail and they have a good few options (greens and also possibly with the independents) if they choose to drop PD's out of govt.

if there was a general election in 2 years time (if no coalition govt. could be formed), i believe that the PD's would not wat one as they haave 8 seats (unfortunately, i'd like to see them wiyth none :D) and a general election i believw eowuld result in the loss of many of these seats (i'd like to see McDowell lose his seat as he's really annoying and i despise him)

another reason why the major parties including FF would not like a a general electiona gain soon if the coalition falls apoart is Glennon of FF nearly didn't win a seat int eh last election in Dublin North with Clare Daly (socialist party)pushing him to the last round. also there were plenty of other close batles like the disab;led people's campaigner in cork constituncy

so i doubt that the coalition of FF/pD will fall apart and i believe that they will see out the end of the 5 year term with the irish people more disillusioned than ever before with the evil sinister right winged dumb idiot things that are called PD

i'd like to see the govt. fail apart as soon as possible as i didn't have the chance to vote last time (as i was 17 when the election happneed) but i sincerely doubt that

i don#'t think that the PDs/ FF coalition will be voted back in for another term straight after this one
