I do have hatches actually, i batten them every night though. I'll have to do it with a bit more intent tonight.

They're wooden window shutters but that'll do for the purposes of the thread.

Like so many other things it's an old English navy term.
Battens are strips of wood used to secure sailcloth over the open hatches that led to below decks when bad weather was spotted.
