The Depravations
Galway-based popsters The Depravations are taking their magnificently melodious début record Onwards, Westwards on tour with a special stripped down version of the quintet - becoming an acoustic three-piece in the process - set to visit Gulpd Café in less than two weeks time. The intimate confines of the Triskel Arts Centre-based treasure trove (located on the ground floor of the Tobin Street complex) should complement the harmony-heav[enl]y indie-poppers down to a tee. Admittedly, I'm cutting the announcement a bit fine but this one is going to be special. And it's FREE.

The Depravations are a five piece indie/ folk/ pop band based in Galway City on the west coast of Ireland. In 2010 they released the Mosey EP which received favourable reviews from such people as Nialler9 (“An impressive debut”), Aoife Barry (“Gentle folky sounds with harmonies to swoon over”) and Barry Gruff (“One of the west of Ireland’s hidden treasures”). Since then they have played Hard Working Class Heroes three years in a row, the Whelan’s Ones To Watch Festival in 2012, the Hotpress Jagermeister Freezer Sessions, the First Music Contact tour and, most recently, the Turning Pirate Mixtape New Years Eve Party with Jape, Neil Hannon, Cathy Davey and Lisa Hannigan.

They released their début album Onwards, Westwards in January 2013 and have since embarked on a nationwide tour to promote it, beginning with The Other Voices Music Trail in Derry. The album was recorded and mixed in Hob Junker Studios and was mastered by Stephen Quinn (Analog Heart). It took over a year to record and was mostly written in the studio. The band take conscious influence from distinctive acts such as Grizzly Bear, David Kitt, Beach House, Buddy Holly and Richard Hawley while attempting to capture something of Galway.Highlights on the album include track four, I Get Lost, and track six, Lost Love. Onwards, Westwards is available from bandcamp.com as a “name your price” download and from Wingnut stalls in Galway, Athlone, Waterford, Limerick and Tralee for €10.
