The Cosmic Right (3 Viewers)

here’s one of the links I fired his way — might come in handy to a couple of you if you come across people hyperventilating about PCR cycle thresholds and other similar stuff.

YEAH BUT I READ ONLINE THAT

not sure what conclusion to draw from it other than that we’re all fucked, I suppose. he has algorithm-brain really bad and I sort of don’t know what to do about it. I’ve started to think of it as kind of like a weird new form of alcoholism where zuckerberg makes money instead of guinness.

This kinda is my conclusion - information and ability to handle it is in flux.
I kinda see this contagion craic as a test case for the climate stuff that we'll be looking at for the rest of our lives and eh, its not promising at all. Like if you can deny a pandemic in the middle of a pandemic, the next thing will be 'oh *country* staged that storm in collusion with *global organisation* because somethign technology, something billionaire, something social control.

I mean regarding your aquaintance - you have the PCR thing- without doing any more digging or mental gymnastics you could just remind them of that. (I mean like, I would, but i sorta would get a laugh out of it). 'oh is this like that PCR thing that you didn't research?' once in a while just remind them. But re-synapticing a brain, via social media, no, thats too much to ask for casual internet using.

Look also - I've been pushing the concept of algorythm brain on here, and I know i'm describing something, i know we see it popping up in all our social circles but if anyone actually sees any resources coming from a pro brain / behavoir people get them in here asap. At present, its nickname for something we see.

I like your analogy of addiction/alcoholism. It is somewhere in that zone for sure.

the guy I know who posts all this kind of stuff was occasionally going on about how all the PCR tests were faked, and for some reason this particular point was irritating me way more than the other stuff. so I went and looked up some basic how-PCR-tests-work type of links and pushed back on him on this one particular point (and more-or-less disregarding all the other loopy stuff). anyway he’s still posting all the crazy stuff, just not about PCR tests.

I think you’re definitely hitting the nail on the head there with the alcoholism analogy. I think there’s a certain strain of single mindedness and compulsive behaviour that’s being tapped into

For some reason I read that last sentence as zuckerberg has stopped making Guinness

I've been doing an awful lot of thinking about identity and belonging lately - don't really have anything coherent yet, but have a strong intuition that things like religious radicalism and anorexia and now this are a lot to do with people's story of themselves. If your story of yourself is that you are if-only-people-could-see-it-deep-down virtuous (religion) or beautiful (anorexia) or too-smart-to-be-tricked-by-The-Man (anti-vax), and then you encounter people with similar stories and some kind of overarching narrative or behaviour pattern, then it's very difficult not to be sucked into a rabbit hole ESPECIALLY if you're not strongly socially connected outside that world

You have to be very gentle calling people out on this shit because you don't want to cut off their social connections outside the rabbit-hole group. Maybe if you can reinforce their story of themselves outside of the context of the rabbit hole it'd work? You're a smart fella, my buddy X knows all about (PCR testing or something) and I don't get it but you might, let me give him a shout, sort of thing

(probably someone's gonna come along now and tell me that there's 2 centuries of prior thought on this, and everything I'm saying was discredited by 1927)

A lot of that makes sense. Actually the part about not having strong social connections outside of the rabbit hole makes sense when I think about the Covid denier that I know. Because a lot of the stuff that they were talking about in terms of social control etc. makes absolutely no sense when you’re out and about in the real world and interacting with actual people

I don't think the past few years are comparable to extant concepts though. I think the route of information is completely new and is not something we can look at a book from 1974 and say 'oh its just this but with lcd screens instead of crt screens'. I suspect that elements of what ye's are bringing - addictions, desocialisation are 100% part of it, but for the below reasons I kinda think it's a new one, sorta.

The reason i think this is from reading about the brain/internet in a book a few years ago and the author, having done a reasonable amount of research came to the conclusion 'too soon to know how this will effect us' but there were a few things that were apparent.

A: off brain memory. We do not need to remember things in the western world. we do not excercise our memories as we used to.
B: changed reading patterns. People used to read left to right, top to bottom. Retina scanning in recent years sees more of a scanning type motion from the eye, picking out what we want from the text.

This book was before youtube and twiiter had really come to the fore. On one, you are doing a daily workout of loosley connected information based more on viewability than information quality. On the other, endless unconnected information, again curated by likelyhood of reaction rather than quality of information.

The flow of information - in comparison to the last 50 years is very different.

With tv - a finite amount of time given to a topic, with a defined conclusion/stop point.
with youtube - it will serve up information on connected topics until you die of exhaustion.

with a book / newspaper - arranged structured texts with a human editor.
twitter - endless non related text with no editor

So if this is the mental gym someone is going to every day, the brain adapts - it always does - but it is adapting to a synthetic environment - which - could be firing enough dopamine hits back at the user to justify it but is most certainly not an environment in which reality can be processed.

I gave that post my full attention and read left to right, top to bottom.

I gave it a like though, and wrote this inconsequential post, so does that make me part of the problem?????!!

Yes. Source of the global govt cabal secret totally public conspiracy to do something but nobody is quite sure what.

Classic Seanc.

Nah i guess - 'the problem' as I percieve it is the rate at which technology can mine ways to distract and 'inform' people is much faster than the rate at which we can understand that as a species, and the baseline quality of information is dropping very fast.

Actually was doing a fact check on one of those far right videos about a month ago and the video was just like sleepy's friends post above in structure - like mixing information with huge undocumented leaps of faith in an semi believable way

And I wonder is it that -

That they fully believed this, that thier mind (as an actual journalist who went to school in this case) is totally ok with this fact/fiction blend as a result of living in the fact/fiction blender

or

they had decided on this pattern as a house style, and knew it keeps watchers watching.

And I've not done another on the same source since but I kinda suspect its the former rather than the latter.

@ann post while I agree that the way we get information is new, and that might have consequences of its own, I think what it's tapping into is as old as civilisation (or older). We didn't need no internet to kick off The Crusades

A: off brain memory. We do not need to remember things in the western world. we do not excercise our memories as we used to.
I read a book called "The Knowledge Illusion" a while ago that had interesting things to say about memory. One of the things was that we only remember a tiny fraction of what we think we do, and that the physical world and other people serve as external memory stores

compulsion is a huge element to to how people interact with information on the internet, theres a one-armed bandit stimulus response thing going on, with the whole system designed both to keep you tapping, and to give you more of what it thinks your interested in.

also some people have a transferrable sense of anxiety, suspicion, ever fear which some of this stuff provides a rationale or 'hook' for. I wouldn't discount this aspect

I read a thing lately that talked about location-based ads - that ads that people around you get influence that ads you get. Make sense I suppose, and explains a lot of the "my phone is listening to me" stuff.

Poor oul Dermot Doran is posting on facebook about the vaccine being all about connecting you to AI. I don't think non-techies have any idea of how fucking boring and mundane and non-magical real AI really is
Jazes theres a blast from the past..if anyone knows about having an addled brain from party drugs is gotta be that man! Good to hear he's still alive

If anyone remembers the band Giant Drag, Annie Harding from that band has had a seriously tough last decade, but has really lost it during Covid. It occurs to me that she's become a real example of this thing though, her posts veer from RADICAL EMPATHY IS THE SOLUTION to THE DEMOCRATS ARE ACTUAL DEMONS WHO NEED TO BE EXORCISED FROM THEIR BODIES WITH KNIVES

Anyway, from reading her twitter timeline it's quite clear that all of this stems from the crippling poverty she lives in in LA. Anyone who lives in a society where that is allowed happen would mistrust their government on principle.

She released a very good album a few years back btw, worth a listen
