Hadn't come across this term before, I think it's a good way of describing the extended universe of Qanon conspiracy weirdos without having to define it only by its US manifestation. Thought maybe we should get a thread going to document this stuff as we come across it. Dolores Cahill probably isn't going away anytime soon.

(article is a year old)

The recently popularized concept of the ‘cosmic right’ offers a helpful way of thinking about one strand of the counter-collective collective action that has grown during the COVID-19 pandemic.... it refers to a blending of New Age and psychedelic cultures with far-right patterns of thought.

The main difference between it and X-Files level of conspiracy theories is that people are wholly invested in it as a massive fight of good against evil, almost entirely in their own head.

Has this has always been a thing?

I'm reading about Luddism and it's not really fighting ideas, or science, or reality. More fighting stuff that makes people redundant, which is understandable.

What's annoying me is my cranky computer science lecturer almost exactly predicted this in 2000.

I imagine so yeah. People say the closest analogue recently is the satanic panic in the 80s, which was mostly driven by well meaning parents and disproportionally affected the poor. There's definitely a millenarian, ultimate fight against evil, angle to this thing.

My own take is that too many people have a horrible cruelty inside them and they just want permission to unleash it on others without having to feel guilty about it. There's a whole psychological angle there about it being the internalized force of our unimaginably cruel society making us all crazy or something but I'm on shaky ground talking about that.

The idea that people are going crazy simply because they've been made redundant by technology, I'm not sure I buy it. It sounds like the kind of thing Silicon Valley guys want us to think is what happens. Tell me more about the luddites though @flashback

I'm seeing this conversation playing out:

"I hate you because you're trying to control every aspect of my life!"
"Wrong, you hate me because I made your job redundant."
"You even want to control my thoughts! ARRGH"

It's selfish people, classic hippy shit. I don't think it's that new but it's certainly gained more prominence with a big cause to rally round for them.

no. I agree. Initially I was thinking this sounds like the Luddites, but I realised quickly enough that I don't think that.
Luddism was rational, cotton looms(?) or whatever the fuck actually were getting automated, and people were losing their jobs.

I think all of this is fairly simple, and to some extent goes back to :drumroll: Thatcher and Regan. Like it always does.

They got militant with the whole government is actually bad line, and they flogged that to the public. The gov is a waste of money, just let us friendly businesses sort you out. When have we ever done you wrong.
Thatcher took it a bit further and got into her: Society is a load of bollocks kick.

This wasn't 100% bought into, so the line that "government" was bad got widened to more than just useless bureaucracies, but to include sinister things as well. This was easily sold, because the govs really were up to sinister shit, which they wanted no one to know about.

So now govs are worse than useless, they're actively sinister.

Then the broadening of the idea of gov kept going until it became a concept of shadowy alternative realities. You can't really draw a line anymore between pretty much any conspiracy and "government" now. Bigfoot, MKUltra, Aliens, Black Helicopters, Area 51.

And the theme was always: knowledge that they had, and they didn't want you to have.

The Government is your enemy, who know what porn you're into, wants to keep the alien secrets secret, and wants to fuck your children.

Surely you should defund these monsters, right? Think of your children.

Now you have a critical mass of people to make it normal. In the 80s it was satanists. Initially that probably sounded a bit wacky, but once you've heard it enough.... surely all that smoke must mean something.

Then you get third parties adding fuel to the fire. There's pointed campaigns, run by who knows, just to act the maggot, who push silly lines because they're just really disruptive in general.

TL;DR: It's the standard magician trick. Your eyes are focused over there, and I'm sliding the little red ball under the pot over here. If people are looking for the pizza pedophiles, they're probably not going to notice they've just got fucked over by their employer again. They're less likely to notice the water is full of fucking lead and toxins. They're less likely to notice they don't have days off.

Yeah pretty much. Now convince Dolores Cahill.

I hope we at least get a Qanon Shaman dude of our own out of this.

probably a facet of the same effect, but i recently dipped into one or two weather threads on boards, and you simply can't mention climate change there without the thread being invaded by deniers. and some of the more experienced 'old man living in carlow with a weather station down the end of the garden for 40 years' types are deniers too, so their opinion carries undue weight (in the sense that they known the jargon).

it's gas seeing the contortions people indulge in to refute any argument that it might be real.

I've noticed they often start out on "there is no climate change", get demonstrated that there definitely is unless suddenly the entire planet has changed how they make thermometers, and move to the "it's natural though" position.

It's never, "oh, huh. Maybe it's to do with all the shite we've been pumping into the place", if they move it's directly to hand waving "natural cycles" talk.

speaking of Dolores Cahill, there's a Justin Beiber election poster still up on Tara St. How do I report it?

Its really high up too. I wonder how such a small little fella like him got it up that high

it seems to boil down to 'unless you can *prove* the recent spate of extreme weather events is due to climate change, that's proved nothing, therefore climate change doesn't exist, that's science you dullards'.

yeah, 'why should i make an effort because china'
lol, that's right. I forgot about that one.

Preemptively not trying anything, because China exists.

Is there a category for the type of argument that you have to be a cunt, because according to you if you're not a cunt, some other cunt with rush in and take up the vacuum?

"LOOK, I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE ALL GETTING SO HIGH AND MIGHTY ABOUT YOUR HONOR! If I hadn't lynched this 13 year old black child for looking at my wife menacingly as she pulled out of the driveway, admittedly in a highly intoxicated state, SOMEONE ELSE WOULD HAVE!"

I hadn't read the opening article in the thread but thought last night I might post this in the thread

Both authors are sorta looking at the same thing - the disconnect - and I guess the term Cosmic is good as any as I guess the core is discontent, and any fantasy that lets you aspire to being content, no matter how fantastical will be a comfort.

I wonder is algorythm brain something that actually makes it impossible for a unified movement - Qanon sorta worked by being shapeless...

There is also a version of this that goes "there is no point making small changes in our personal behaviours until we take down massive corporations who are doing the polluting."

And straight into the charts in 2021

"there is no point making small changes in our personal behaviours when Elon Musk/Branson/Bezos is going to space".
