This Sunday, a night of dark, abstract hip-hop with Jenny & The Deadites and Deep Burial...

JENNY & THE DEADITES
Not a Sam Raimi tribute band, although their skewed take on hip-hop is almost as twisted as one of his early films. MC Jenny Brannigan declaims her dark, brooding poetry over beats laptopped up by Ian McDonnell and Dara Smith, combining into a minimalist hip-hop that might not exactly cheer you up, but will at least make you nod your head as it fucks with it.

This is the trio's second Lazybird appearance, and if it's even one-tenth as good as the previous one, you'd be well-advised to check it out.

DEEP BURIAL
George Brennan and Richie Howard have been an integral part of Dublin's underground electronic and hip-hop scene for the past decade. Their first couple of releases came out on the semi-legendary Ultramack label in the late '90s, with the Undead EP following in 2001. Along the way, they've played live all over Ireland, including at festivals such as DEAF and Mantua, but never before at Lazybird. But we're glad to finally get 'em.

Their latest album, Black Music, is as visceral and amusing as its cover art, all squishing and pulsing with bodily fluids. Jim Carroll of The Ticket gives it four stars and a very nice review:

"While Deep Burial have long sought to bring out the John Carpenter in their music, Black Music is the first time you can hear their own distinctly sinister sculptures take shape. Dublin duo George Brennan and Richie Howard have already spent 10 years in the instrumental hip-hop game, producing a number of sporadic releases along the way in an attempt to get all RZA on our asses. Black Music, though, is a huge leap forward, an album strung out on perfectly-pitched hissing soundscapes, shuffling tearaway beats and brilliantly realised ennui of the late-night-in-the-'burbs kind. In Deep Burial's zombie nation, you never know where the next attack will come from, and the likes of `Waggot Confetti', `18 West Road' and `Psychedelic Sewer' contain buckets of menace. With nods left, right and centre to such masterly scene-setters as Carpenter and Herrmann, Deep Burial are beginning to really get the hang of putting both blood and gore in the music."

As they say, available at all finer stores near you.

So if this sounds like your cup of fur, make your way to the upstairs of the International 'round 'bout 9pm on Sunday, pay your five euro, and (un)settle down. See you then.

PLUG TIME! Lazybird officially endorses the following really, really cool events:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Friday 15 September, in the Pallas Studios (Foley Street) at 8pm, an album launch party for LUFTKLUSTER/LUFTFLUKS...

Luftkluster/Luftfluks is the second album in an ongoing series of LP editions by Canell & Watkins. Following The New Heat/Obscured by Light projects, the new album further expands the duo’s joint commitment to generate subjective fluctuations between structured and free-form melodies. Combining found objects, instruments and other analogue mechanics with organ, guitar, voice and custom built percussion, the LP is as volatile as the material it is made from.

The open songs of Luftkluster/Luftfluks hover in midair, occasionally interrupted by angular signals from electro-physiological instruments or the hypnotic humming of a 6.25 meter tape-loop. It flows from vocal interludes to fluxing fluorescent noise, blending rootless percussion with damaged flickers of electric drone organs. The unpredictable nature of Luftkluster/Luftfluks’ humid melodies exists somewhere in between spontaneity and determinacy; a quiet, ephemeral collage of alternating altitudes.

Rather than operating within the traditional format of a band, the projects by Canell & Watkins take on various shapes and forms, allowing them to move freely from live improvisation to sculptural installations, found sounds and structured song writing. As a consequence, the name of this duo continuously shifts along with the intention and context of each project. When performing they integrate their diverse practices into a dense and highly idiosyncratic live set.

Luftkluster/Luftfluks comes as white solid vinyl in a handfolded edition of 250 numbered copies.

The Art of Decision is an interactive multimedia exhibition that encourages the individual to realise their significance in relation to political decision-making. The exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to travel through 9 interactive rooms that present opinions and ideas about power and decision-making from a variety of research participants in an engaging, theatrical way. Contributors' ideas are presented alongside statistical information in a meaningful and innovative fashion using sound, film and interactive installations.

This documentary, premiered in the Darklight Film Festival 2006, examines the work of the Art of Decision research team as they formulate an innovative response to the low levels of participation in political decision-making in Ireland. It documents the development of the exhibition through interviews with the research team and detailed footage of the exhibition.

This Project is funded by the Irish Government under the Equality for Women Measure and part-financed by the European Union under the National Development Plan 2000-2006.
