It's the most devastating moment in a young mans life, when he quite reasonably says to himself, "I shall never play Lack Of Comprehension!" It is at that moment that all ambition ceases to exist.

Been looking at a few videos in downtime, Jan Stixonspeed and Matt Garstka and stuff. Totally amazing but a bit like watching someone juggle six balls....doesn't even feel like music to me. The drum kit as we would recognise is is originally a circus instrument, meant to reproduce the sound of a percussion section. All that incredible technique is zero crack. It would be great fireworks here and there in a tune but in general fuck that noise...it all seems like one oddly ghettoised and competitive form of music to my old ears.

Having said that, I really like this guy:

For the superdrumming intellectual side of things, nobody will ever be better than Jack De Johnette.

So I heard Sultans of Swing on the radio tonight for the billionth time and never noticed before how onomatopoeic the little shuffle between "...and says at last just as the time bell rings" and "goodnight - now it's time to go home" is, like the sound of people rushing to the bar for last orders.

It's the only time he does anything like that in the whole song.

Glad you finally noticed it. I noticed it when I was listening to my older brothers tapes when I was nine years old. It's such a wicked fill.

Seeing as that song is based on Dire Straits early days in the pubs I frequent around here, there's actually lots of bits that chime for me and the other dirty regulars. Not that anyone round here actually likes Dire Straits of course...

I mean COME ON
