J.J. Abrams loved the Star Wars: Episode VIII script so much, he regrets not directing it

Posted December 23 2015 — 9:13 AM EST

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hasn’t even been in theaters a full week yet, but plans are already in motion for its follow-up, Episode VIII. Rian Johnson (Looper) is directing that sequel, but J.J. Abrams is apparently regretting not returning to the galaxy far, far away to helm it himself.

His longtime friend Greg Grunberg (who has a small part in The Force Awakens and also appeared on Abrams’ TV series Lost and Felicity) told The Washington Post that Abrams reacted that way after recently reading the Episode VIII script.

“He read it and said something he never, ever says,” Grunberg said of Abrams. “He said: ‘It’s so good, I wish I were making it.’”

“He may have said something one time on Lost, with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator],” the actor added, “but I never hear him express regret like that.”

Star Wars: Episode VIII is slated for release on May 26, 2017. Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) is directingEpisode IX, which will arrive in 2019.

In the meantime, The Force Awakens continued its record-shattering run this week, earning the biggest-ever Monday box office haul with $40.1 million.

You all know Episode VIII isn't the next Star Wars film, right? Rogue One is out this time next year, a prequel based around how the Rebels get the Death Star plans.

How long before this turns into the groanfest of a new marvel film.
I reckon the regular films (Episodes VIII and IX) will be great but the other ones (Rogue One, the Han Solo thing and whatever else they're cooking up) will go to shit very quickly.

Rey took her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will continue her epic journey with Finn, Poe, and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the continuing Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Episode VIII, which began principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London on February 15, 2016.

Star Wars: Episode VIII
, which is written and directed by Rian Johnson and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcomes back cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and talented newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

History : Star Wars was the second print procured
by Team Negative1. 6 x 35mm reels were scanned and archived.
There was 6 reels of a Spanish LPP print, and 5 reels
of a red faded Eastman print, and 1 further reel 5 with
10 minutes.

The LPP had minimal damage, but more on the heads and tails.
There was a constant amount of dust and dirt throughout.

There were no splices except for the original crawl, and
Han shoots first scene.

Technical : Scan was in 2k, and resulted in a HD 1080p version.
Later, select shots were rescanned in 4k, along with the rest
of the LPP print. This was not used as the workflow was already
1080p.

Compatibility :
At this point, there is no GOUT compatibility and no subtitles.

Not done:
- Cleanup of glue frames

Future : There are advanced Eastman Kodak prints ready to be
restored. The scans are 4k, but again we are targetting 1080p
for the final release.
