Songs that leave you blubbering like a child. (1 Viewer)

martha - tom waits
my head is my only house unless it rains - captain beefheart

i think that one has one of the loveliest lyrics of all time, always gets me

I'll let a train be my feet
If it's too far to walk to you
If a train don't go there I'll get a jet or a bus
Because I'm going to find you
You're going to see me shadow soon around you
And my
head is my only house unless it rains

I walk the meadow plains
Water deserts are my eyes until I find you
I won't sleep until I find you
I won't eat until I find you
My heart won't beat until
I wrap my arms around you

My arms are just two things in the way
Until I can wrap them around you
You can make my sad song happy
Make a bad world good
I can feel you out there moving
You're mine, I know I'll find you
And my
head is my only house until I've found you

I hate to have other people hear me sing this song
If this reaches you before I do
Follow it to "I love you"
That's where I'll find you
And my
head is my only house until I find you

Caroline Says Part 2 by Lou Reed or Whipping Boy
My Father House by Bruce Springsteen
Redemption Song by Joe Strummer
Hurt by Johnny Cash ... I'm sensing a dead singer/cover version happening here !!!

But the all time, make me cry song is I want you by Elvis Costello..

I want you

Oh my baby baby I love you more than I can tell
I don’t think I can live without you
And I know that I never will
Oh my baby baby I want you so it scares me to death
I can’t say anymore than I love you
Everything else is a waste of breath
I want you
You’ve had your fun you don’t get well no more
I want you
Your fingernails go dragging down the wall
Be careful darling you might fall
I want you
I woke up and one of us was crying
I want you
You said young man I do believe you’re dying
I want you
If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days
You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways
I want you
Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget
I want you
Since when were you so generous and inarticulate
I want you
It’s the stupid details that my heart is breaking for
It’s the way your shoulders shake and what they’re shaking for
It’s knowing that he knows you now after only guessing
I want you
It’s the thought of him undressing you or you undressing
I want you
He tossed some tatty compliment your way
I want you
And you were fool enough to love it when he said
I want you
I want you
The truth can’t hurt you it’s just like the dark
It scares you witless
But in time you see things clear and stark
I want you
Go on and hurt me then we’ll let it drop
I want you
I’m afraid I won’t know where to stop
I want you
I’m not ashamed to say I cried for you
I want you
I want to know the things you did that we do too
I want you
I want to hear he pleases you more than I do
I want you
I might as well be useless for all it means to you
I want you
Did you call his name out as he held you down
I want you
Oh no my darling not with that clown
I want you
You’ve had your fun you don’t get well no more
I want you
No-one who wants you could want you more
I want you
Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up
I want you
I want you
I’m going to say it once again ’til I instill it
I know I’m going to feel this way until you kill it
I want you
I want you

And the band played waltzing matilda - The Pogues
I hung my head - Sting/Johnny Cash
American Remains - The Highwaymen
I just was'nt made for these times - Beach Boys

I don't really cry to songs but these come pretty close to approximating the feeling.

'And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda' - jesus thats a killer and I'm not evn part Australian. The Dubliners version is also killer, especially where they start singing 'Waltzing Matilda' itself and then the music stops and he sings "...and his ghost may be heard as we march along the billabong..." Fucking heebeejeebees moment there.

The Colour And The Kids by Cat Power is fucking gorgeous. I think its two chords over and over again. Its not sad, its just really evocative.

I Didn't Understand by Elliott Smith, especially now that he's dead.

I just remembered a great self-pity anthem:

Nobody's Fault But My Own by Beck from Mutations. Much better than nearly everything else he's done....

Also, Abused by Elliott Smith is really harsh and sad given its subject matter (eh, abuse)

I Am The Cosmos by Chris Bell - the sound of desperation personified....he sounds sad its impossible not to feel for him.

Some killers mentioned already so here are my others.

Leonard Cohen: 'Famous blue raincoat' or 'It seems so long ago, Nancy'
This Mortal Coil: 'My father'
Kate Bush: 'Cloudbusting' or 'Mother stands for comfort' (it's actually the bass playing in that one that turns the faucet, it's not a parent thing)
Dolly Parton: 'Down from Dover'
Sun Kil Moon: 'Carry me Ohio'

that's all I can think of immediately

Ah jaysus - i'm sorry but i have to join in - it has to be "fire and rain" by james taylor... i remember being so in love with the actor river phoenix that it made me ache and watching him in the movie "running on empty" where he grew up with parents who were on the run from the fbi and he had to keep changing his identity and dying his hair and shit and then he decides he wants his own life but it means never seeing his family again and they have this real happy/sad family moment where they're all in the kitchen singing along to fire and rain and for fucks sake it's so sad anyway because james taylor wrote it when his wife died- jesus christ right - it was his birthday and he was away on tour so his manager flew his wife out as a suprise to see him - and the fucking plane crashed - and she fucking died...
Can you imagine the fucking downer?

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought I'd see you again

Jaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyysssuuussss
Fuck me... wowch... aaaaaaagh....
No - it's to much. ANd then River went and fucking died... my heart... oh god... oh god my heart... that song
Oh god.... i'm on the verge of fucking bawling now...
But maybe that's because the start of my weekend is being spent sitting in and trawling though your randomness. hi btw. (irony? are these smilies for real?)

Is that the second verse?

Hey - a couple more:

"That's no way to say goodbye" - Leonard Cohen
I curled up into a little ball and listened to a greatest hits album over and over again after i broke up with my first boyfriend... so it was years before i was able to listen to any of it again.. but this one especially "walk me to the corner - our steps will always rhyme..." pffffffff

"In my life" - Johnny Cash version
Again - the whole American iv album gets me what with his voice and the imminent death and all - but this song - it's got the whole nostalgia buzz for all that's happened - places and people - and it sounds like it's a love song "in my life i love you more" - but with his voice - he makes it sound like such a sad thing, like he's lost so much... ooeettch - i can't explain it. Gets me hard.

"Brick" and "Smoke" - Ben Folds Five
em - yeah - it was a good summer that one - and this tape on constantly... it's the memories and the piano and the cheap trick minors...

And just so you can hate me before you know me:
"Promise me" - Beverly Craven
i can't explain. Ask your mom. Or your big sister. But then, they're probably a lot cooler than i am... hey and while i'm at it - what's that song off the movie "Beaches" - you know - with Bette Midler? (!ironyyy)

except that it's not really irony - she's dying for dogssakes - "it must have beeen cold there in my shaadow de de de de de de de de to ne-ver have sunlight on your face da da da de da de da da but you were content to leet mee shiiine - for so long -..."
ahem...
or something.

Ah now - cumon - *snigger* - no man - cummon - his fucking wife man *snort* - it's the emothion getting me fer fuggsake...
having a bit of trouble here with the emotion spilling onto the keyboard
second verse... heh

that jcb song by nizlopi had me blubbering. also loads of john mccormack stuff (check out his versions of "Ben Bolt" and "The Snowy Breasted Pearl" - i defy you not to cry). has there ever been a finer singer?

(note to self - must stop posting on thumped when drunk)

recently it's Invisible Man by Marillion from their latest album. It's not so much the lyrics (dead bloke visiting his life seeing his wife getting on with hers) but at one point the vocal delivery, cord changes and drum pattern all come together and it's overwhelming. I've had to skip it when I've been driving.

Also local shout out to Omelette who have the ultimate break-up song on their album Off By Heard, Without Saying A Word.

and on a nostalgia buzz - that song by the Golden Horde - "Friends in time".. i loved that song - i'd love to hear that again!
