Overview:
Shudder To Think formed in 1986 and were a part of a wave of younger punk bands making music that was inspired by, but also independent from, the current Dischord scene. The band soon developed its own following and released a single and an album on Sammich Records. Before long their shows began to showcase the power of their playing and their weird melange of punk, glam, and theater. Ian and Jeff, from Dischord Records, decided to ask them if they wanted to join the label and soon after, they released "Ten Spot".

At some point, Shudder to Think were asked to play the 16th birthday party of a local punk kid, Nathan Larsen, who was playing bass in a new band called Swiz. Five or six years later Nathan would join Shudder to play guitar when Chris Matthews left the band for school. A year or so later, Mike Russell also had to leave and was replaced by Adam Wade, of Jawbox, on the drums.

In the mid-'90s, the band signed to Epic Records and became one of only two bands to leave Dischord for a major label. They moved to NYC and released a couple of albums on Epic, but became less and less of a touring/performing entity, focusing more on movie soundtracks before separating at the end of the decade.

Funeral At The Movies was Shudder to Think's third full-length record and was released in 1991

Spotify version is the 2 x LP 'Maxi CD' release (with Ten Spot, and is a CD everyone should own), but is missing the Crosstown Traffic cover.

Wow, throwback. I liked Shudder to Think, and loved that Dischord we’re into putting out their records. I prefer Get Your Goat to this one though.

I got this on viny somewhere. Will dig it out and give it a spin.

I always think I don't like this record, but I do.Although there is a clunker or two on it.
It's the one after I don't like. in fact I think it's so bad I think I don't like this one too.

i bought this thinking it would be a hardcore band so i got a surprise...
just not into to this era i suppose. my copy is long gone.
this is definitely somewhere on more acceptable end of what was called e-m-o
at the time.
Day Ditty, the Hendrix cover and last track have something to do with the fact
i don't have any Dischord records from after i bought this in 1993.

how many people nominated this ? (other than Pete).

funny trivia:
this was one of those records that Tim Yohannan of Maximum Rock n Roll
refused to give a review in that zine, saying it wasn't punk !
many, many records didn't meet his definition though.
their earlier material was reviewed.

Fantastic! This was my intro to Shudder To Think after hearing 'Red House' on the Dischord box set. The muddy sound works against it, but the songs are there. But because it's an EP or a mini album or whatever, it's slightly below Ten Spot for me. Get Your Goat is a big step up, too, and I finally got a handle on Pony Express Record a few months ago (though it's still far too long, damn you 1990s CD bloat).

I never actually owned this album, just the Maxi CD version. I'd bought Ten Spot during a BUY IT IF IT'S ON DISCHORD phase, back when a couple of times a year we'd go to London for a weekend to visit as many record shops as possible and hope the albums wouldn't get bent on the coach back to Holyhead.

It took me a while to get into that record; it's funny looking back now but at the time it just sounded like a complete discordant/atonal racket, to my uneducated ears anyway. It was very different to 99% of the music I was listening to at the time, that's for sure. But then the choruses hit, and then you start to get a handle on the melodies, and then it all falls into place, and you get it,and then you love it (and then you find yourself talking about it on the internet 27 years later, as you do). Funeral At The Movies just consolidated that for me. To be honest it was a toss up between this and Ten Spot for album club, but Funeral At The Movies just edged it... Red House and Chocolate.

The later albums are great, but they for me they don't come close. The live album from 2009 is surprisingly good too. Well worth a listen. He even almost hits all the high notes....

The 'Crosstown Traffic' cover isn't on Apple Music or the Dischord Bandcamp either, the rights were probably prohibitively expensive. Something I didn't catch before: searching for the lyrics for 'Red House', Hendrix has a song by the same name (I know nothing about Jimi).

Oh and in case youse didn't know, Ten Spot was remastered earlier this year.
