With our national day approaching and our country in a mess with nearly a half a million unemployed is it worth asking the question...

SHOULD THERE BE ANOTHER SELF AID?

If there was another self aid this year who would you want to see and where should it take place?

Self Aid was a benefit concert held in Dublin, Ireland on 17 May 1986. The purpose of the concert was to highlight the chronic unemployment problem in Ireland at the time, with nearly 250,000 people unemployed. The 14 hour concert was the largest that had ever been staged in Ireland. All of the musicians below donated their time free of charge.

Auto Da Fe
Bagatelle
Big Self
Blue in Heaven
The Boomtown Rats
Paul Brady
Chris de Burgh
Cactus World News
The Chieftains
Clannad
De Danann
Rory Gallagher
The Fountainhead
In Tua Nua
Les Enfants
Light A Big Fire
Christy Moore
Van Morrison
Moving Hearts
The Pogues
Chris Rea
Scullion
Brush Shiels
Stockton's Wing
Thin Lizzy
Those Nervous Animals
U2
Freddie White
Elvis Costello

We do need a self aid for 2009, don't we? Phoenix Park this time?

U2 sang Help at the gig:

I can see the headlines - "Brush Shiels sings, credit crunch averted"

Please God no.

What would it set out to achieve? To raise money which would go where? To highlight a problem everyone knows is there? If my memory serves me correctly the last one naively thought it could create jobs by having a sing-song. Bono going "AIB, BOI, NIB, RTE.....give deeez people jawwwwbz" !ninjaaaa

I wouldn't call those people on the dole with massive mortgages sold during the property scam as saps! Was just hoping that some promoter or band manager out there sees some support for a self aid type gig this summer and gets it on! No need for them to do this when d4 heads shells out a fortune for oxegen tickets!
