There’s a film club in the Denzille Cinema (near the Ginger Man pub & Merrion Sq) in Dublin on Thursday’s at 7pm.

It focuses on films from the 1930’s & 1940’s with one or more strong female leads.
It tends to have a particular interest in pre-code films (1930-1934) before the censorship rules were enforced & films could deal with subjects like abortion, drug use & three-way relationships.

It’s run by Megan McGurk who gives a brief background to each film beforehand.

I have absolutely no involment in running it but I’ve been going regularly & figure that the more people who know about it, the more likely it is to continue.

It’s not a lecture, Megan picks these films because they are good (often funny) movies.
It’s a celebration of a golden age for women in Hollywood & well worth the ticket price of €10 (snacks & soft drinks included!)

Yeah, so I totally jinxed it.
The Denzille Cinema just got sold for apartments (or maybe just one fancy apartment).
So, if you fancy seeing a film there, get in quick.
There's 2 films left in this series, then Megan is planning a shorter 4-film run before a summer break.
Not sure what'll happen after that.

Tonight's film is The Hard Way (1943).
Based on the real life story of Ginger Rogers & starring the multi-talented actress-producer-director Ida Lupino.

7pm tonight (Thursday 3rd)

Sass Mouth Dames Film Club Series 4

A rare event this Thursday.
A colour movie!

Ginger Rogers stars in Lady in the Dark (1944).

"Although this production had plenty of trouble on the set, with everything from bitter feuds, health and safety hazards, costume snafus, to schedule and budget problems, virtually none of it shows on-screen. Mitchell Leisen’s picture uses elaborate set and costume design to stage the psychological crisis Ginger Rogers experiences as a fashion magazine editor who has sudden panic attacks and can’t make up her mind. In her first film shot in technicolour, Ginger shines in dream sequences dipped in a primary colour palette of blue, white and red. Edith Head designed the mink skirt lined with red sequins that Ginger wears for the show stopper ‘The Saga of Jenny’. Not to be missed."

Series 5 starts this Thursday & it's back to the pre-code movies
A perfect way to celebrate the week we've just had.

Ladies of Leisure (1930)

Screens 31 May.
"Roommates Barbara Stanwyck and Marie Prevost pay the bills with sex work. One night after a narrow escape from a party boat, with smeared mascara and a torn dress, Stanwyck’s character meets a rich man who drives her back into the city. Ralph Graves plays an artist with his own roof top studio. He offers her a job posing for a portrait. Stanwyck assumes that it’s only a matter of time until he proves himself to be after only one thing, like every other man she has met. Despite her misgivings and his society name, she falls for the guy. Things look swell until his mother attempts to thwart the romance. Can Marie Prevost protect her dearest friend from disaster? This is the first of four pictures that Stanwyck made with director Frank Capra."

As always, free soft drinks & sweets included in your €11 ticket price.
