I go running about 3 nights a week, usually about 3 or 4 miles.

Ive been doing it about 4 months now.

80% of the time i feel good and have no problem but every so often i get bad pain in my lower legs (front) and lower back after just a few minutes of running.

I dont get it...maybe im lacking some vitamins or something?

I guess i should probably ask a doctor but thumped is cheaper

Stretch your calves really well. Make sure your ankles aren't flopping all over the place. If you get shin splints, you absolutely should not aggravate them by running on hard surfaces when you're in pain.

Cross-train. That can mean swimming, walking, cycling or whatever.

Stand on the edge of a step and raise your calves and lower them.

Do squat exercises, arms out in front; they're good for balance and for your back and whatnot.

If it's really bad, you should go to a sports specialist. My physio in Temple Bar (where anthology books used to be) is really good.

Compeed do plasters, tht kinda feel like a thick layre of skin, they're great for foot blisters

Foot blisters are the real killer.

Whats good for those?

Ugh. Ick. Put Vaseline on your feet.

Are you getting them in the same place all the time? I used to get them on my heel really badly, like the time I got two blood blisters on top of each other and they got infected and I had to get antibiotics. But it was actually because the way my foot hit the ground when I was running.

If they're just a bit of overall friction and stuff, you should be fine with some compeed and sports lube. If it's recurring blister patterns then you might want to find out if it's actually because you're running a bit lopsided, which could turn into something a bit more painful.

go to a physio and get your posture checked. Chances are you have dropped arches. They'll give you a prescription for insoles and they'll sort your problem.

it is shin splints and they're a pain in the hole, but very preventable.

And like your balls, once your arches drop, there's no going back. One of my feet is almost totally flat, and it caused so many different problems over the years. I got prescription orthotics that cost a bundle, but they've saved me a lot of money on trips to the physio, and I don't have to replace my running shoes as often as I used to.

Oh yeah, and make sure you're running in the right kind of shoe for you. It's not to do with how much they cost, but what they do. For example, the last (the bit your foot goes on), if it's really solid and 'board-lasted' then it gives you more stability. Not everyone needs that.

It also depends what part of your foot hits the ground first. If you're a forefoot runner (generally faster runners and very light people run this way), you need more help in the toe. If you're a heel striker (most of us slowpokes are like that), you need good heel support.

The more support you get in your shoe, the more technical it probably is, and therefore the more expensive. You should also make sure you replace your shoes every few hundred miles. More often if you're in a more technical shoe, which is crap because they're also pricier. Used to be every 400 miles or so, but now that shoes are more technical, they break down quicker.

So depending what kind of runner you are and what kind of shoe you have, I'd say every 200-250 miles is a good place to start. Given that you're probably running around 12 miles a week, that's around every six months or so.

I also find sometimes rotating between two different types of shoe is helpful, only at the moment, there's just one kind of shoe that I love to bits and I hesitate to run in anything except my beloved Brooks Adrenalines.

PS: I am still waiting for my balls to drop.

See my edit. I don't really know anything about having balls.

I mean, how could I? Look how I abused my arches -- you think anyone would let me have a set of balls after the reckless disregard I have shown towards my feet?

don't give up hope jane, those balls of your may drop any day now. And if/when they do, prepare for lots of scratching!

I used to get this from Irish dancing, it was due to an over developed arch in my foot.I think fallen arches cause the same pain.Try doing 10 minutes of pilates foot and ankle stretches before each run or on the days you don't go running
