Records/Songs of '09 (2 Viewers)

my album of the year is probably

'being dufay' by ambrose field and john potter.

its 14th century chant with a bit of electronics. probably the most retro album ever.

i heard some John Potter a few months ago. I was meant to check it out but forgot all about it. I'd like to hear this one.

edit: it was this one: The Dowland Project - Romaria

Songs

Bat for lashes - Daniel

Definitely my album of the year of the stuff I got to hear.

John 4:16 by the Mountain Goats would be the song.

I also quite liked:
Walking alone at night - Vivian Girls
What Happened - Emeralds (if that was this year)
Secret House - Jodis
Horribles Parade - Gary War
The Load - homostupids

New Things:
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Marissa Nadler - Little Hells
Mountains - Choral
Woods - Songs of Shame
Anchiskhati Choir - Polyphonic Voices Of Georgia

Compilations:
Can You Dig It ? The Music and Politics of Black Action Films 1968 - 75
Black Rio Volume 2: Original Samba Soul 1968-1981

I don't think it was an overly memorable year musicwise really. It was ok, but there have been better. Pick of 09 for me;

- CreatureEsque - Throw Me The Statue (The one standout album for me - I've developed a mini-obsession with it)
- Pains of Being Pure at Heart - (Even though I got a copy of this at the wedding present gig last december, it was only released in February)
- Season of the Sparks - Adrian Crowley
- Espers III (only have it a couple of weeks but its deadly)
- Songs Of Shame - Woods (likewise)
- Hospice - Antlers
- Catacombs - Cass McCombs
- Delivrance - AHAAH
- Animals in the Dark - William E Whitmore
- Workin on a Dream - Bruce
- Animal Collective - MPP
- Summer of Hate - Crocodiles
- Remind me Where the Light is - Great Northern
- Watch Me Fall - Jay Reatard
- Broken Notes For Winter Homes - The Hollows
- Immovable Romance - Land Lovers
- Memoirs at the End of the World - The Postmarks
- Help - Thee Oh Sees
- Hollow Kind - Villagers

My favourite song of 2009 is....
Hopefully this thread will introduce me to some stuff I should have listened to. I spent a lot of time discovering old stuff and working my way through the recommended listening in Alex Ross' The Rest is Noise.

A good book. Been reading parts of it again recently.

At the end of the year, this is my favourite record and I don't get sick of playing it at all yet - with this a close second.

Great songs, off the top of my head:

Grizzly Bear - While You Wait For The Others
Cass McCombs - Dreams Come True Girl
Dirty Projectors - Temecula Sunrise
Dirty Projectors - Two Doves
Dirty Projectors - Knotty Pine
Animal Collective - In The Flowers
Animal Collective - My Girls
St. Vincent - Strangers

Massive indie cliché fest. I'll think of more!

Oh I forgot about Summer of Hate by Crocodiles. Liked that a lot.

And I've been listening to Real Estate for the last couple of working days. Lovely album altogether.

Ah, but good indie cliche records.
My list:
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem
Grizzly Bear/Dirty Projectors/Animal Collective
Eddie Marcon - Yahho no Pottori & Wata No Kemuri No Syotaijo
Deerhoof - Offend Maggie
True Widow - S/T
Martin Finke - Make Daylight

The Black - Alongside Death
Krallice - Dimensional Bleedthrough
Pastels/Tenniscoats - Two Sunsets
Loan - Hontziria
Adrian Crowley & Valerie Francis LPs
Orchestre Poly-Rythmo reissue yoke

that beirut fella should win an award for least amount of completed songs over a 2 disc release in 2009. There's seriously about 3 songs in total on it

DragonSlayer -- Sunset Rubdown
