My favourite song of 2009 is....
If You Leave it Alone by the Wave Pictures.

I'm really bad at remembering songs/records I like. This thread might help.

On the Irish front, I was very impressed by the Patrick Kelleher album and the Groom EP (title track of that wins my fave Irish song). Honest.

I wish I hadn't forgotten my iPod.

I loved the compilation Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro Sounds and Nigerian Blues 1970-76.

Sunset Rubdown's Dragonslayer and Handsome Furs' Face Control kept up the amazingness of the Wolf Parade-related output. THe former in particular was incredible, and the first SR album I REALLY liked.

Hopefully this thread will introduce me to some stuff I should have listened to. I spent a lot of time discovering old stuff and working my way through the recommended listening in Alex Ross' The Rest is Noise.

what does he recommend Moods?
Well it's all 20th Century 'classical' stuff I suppose. So lads like Messaien, Copland, Stravinsky, Shostakovitch, Reich, Britten, Sibelius, Schoenberg, Berg, etc, etc. And your Gershwins and Duke Ellingtons. I found some of it to be hard work but I enjoyed enough to make it worthwhile, and loved a fair chunk.

Oh I didn't know that caUSE-co-MOTION! had an album out this year. Must lay hands on it.
The Guilty Office by The Bats was very good.
As was the Deadlies EP, I didn't realise that was this year.

my album of the year is probably

'being dufay' by ambrose field and john potter.

its 14th century chant with a bit of electronics. probably the most retro album ever.

my irish song of the year is 'love is hard' by the lie-ins. i haven't listened to tonnes of irish this year but thats the stand out one.
