I really like lonely, atmospheric, late night jazz.

Ike Qubec - Blue and sentimental
Paul Desmond - Feeling Blue (compilation)
Heavy Flute - Jazz flute compilation
Nicole Mitchell ice crystals - Aquarius
Dexter Gordon - Ballads

Grabbed a few things today between Tower and the Record Fair -
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue and Miles Smiles
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Dig That Beat (3 CD) includes The Big Beat, Night in Tunisia and Moanin'
Astrud Gilberto - The Essential Astrud Gilberto (ok, not strictly Jazz, but I'm partial to a bit of Bossa Nova)
Duke Ellingon's Greatest Hits
That should keep me going for a bit!

No Room for Squares - again has Lee Morgan on it so there's a bonus already. Great cover too.

Saw Elvin Jones in Vicar Street a good few years back. Amazing gig.
i've slept on that elvin jones album. picked it up a few years ago. need to give it a proper listen. must have been amazing to see him. i remember reading accounts of his very last performances when he was pretty sick. played right up to the end, more to pay his medical bills than anything iirc. sad. utter legend

Just checked up there and the gig was in 2000. I remember him smiling for the whole gig and the crowd absolutely loved him. I'm still in awe to this day that I saw the drummer who played on Sketches of Spain and A Love Supreme, He worked with anyone who was anyone in jazz, Miles, Thad Jones, Sonny Rollins, Gil Evans, Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Roland Kirk, the list just keeps on going.

My dad and brother went to see Art Blakey in Dublin in 1989 I think, I was a bit too young to go and wasn't in to jazz either. My dad told me that Blakey was funny in his old age, he insisted in being paid in cash and up front before the gig. He'd been screwed over so many times back in the day that he was very paranoid. I think this caused issues in the venue and it took him about an hour before he appeared on stage. Obviously after getting his cash.

Yeah jazz album covers are brilliant. I got this book at Christmas:
Amazon product ASIN 1843405997Great little book to dip into. So many good covers.

Ahh... great thread. Did anyone mention Avishai Cohen? I quite like At Home and Continuo. Two really enjoyable modern, pretty melodic jazz records, with some savage drumming (Mark Guiliana).
