In view of the 'Informative' rating recently awarded to my original post I'd like to revise my rating for Old Rottenhat up to 8.5. I don't know why I failed to get that album for so long, it's very charming and full of lovely catchy sing-along low-key pop songs.

Thanks for the update. Have a sudden craving to buy a load of music since reading the Johnny Marr book. Robert Wyatt, Talking Heads, The The, Dexeys etc. This thread is gold in this regard!

I listened to all The Smiths albums today

The Smiths - 9
Meat is Murder - 8
The Queen is Dead - 10
Strangeways Here We Come - 9.5
No Rank? (Not a studio album I know, but ...)
I think I'd go a 6 or 7 on The Smiths - I remember being very disappointed when that came out. I expected something a lot better. Mind you, I think it's grown on me over the years but still I rarely play it.
I'd probably go a 7/8 on Strangeways.

I'd agree with you there. Aside from The Queen, the best thing about The Smiths are the singles compilations. The albums are grand but pale in comparison.

Out of the 6-7 that I have, I'd agree with those ratings. About a year ago I would have given One Nation a much lower score but it clicked with me. Hard.

Only 8 for Blood on the Tracks?

I love Street Legal but that's as far as I have gone.

Fair play.
