This post:

I'm the opposite. I'm punctual to a fault. I hate tardiness. I've recently fallen out with someone over this.

made me think...

I can understand this to an extent. Someone being late can be very rude and I'd even go so far as to say it can be exercised as a way controlling you - as in, keeping you waiting to sort of keep you in your place.

But I dunno, I also I think punctuality for its own sake is a bit pointless. And I'd go so far as to say it's just as bad as being really late, in that it's just as annoying.

(PS That's not a jibe at you Bernie Lomax, just that your post reminded me of this)

actually that probably did come off as slagging you even with the caveat haha, sorry Bernie

I mean, I like to be on time for stuff, generally. So I'm not anti-punctuality.

What do you all think?

Before mobile phones, i would regularly be left (and expect to be left) standing for an hour under Clery's clock. She was worth it.

Nowadays it totally cracks me up - not any lack of punctuality, but not being kept informed.

depends what it is though innit

like, if you're late to a meeting to to something with a group of people, so what. But if you're late meeting one person and thats causing them to feel like a bit of a spare plumb standing around and waiting, then thats not cool at all.

I dunno about a social thing...yeah, always bad to leave someone hanging. I'm more talking about meetings and the like.

(Actually I just realised, I've kind of stopped socialising and when I'm turning up for something, there's always some purpose/meeting. That's not good!)

People can be late for stuff, I understand that, be there's is no excuse for not informing people what the story is these days. I've a few friends who are consistantly late for stuff and they don't even acknowledge it, and THAT drives me spare.

I also I think punctuality for its own sake is a bit pointless.

Example?

I am always 3-4 minutes late. I am always aware of this, I had excellent sense of direction, I know the fastest ways around town, I am good at estimating how long it takes to get places, and I factor all of this into trying to leave the house on time, but I still always leave 3-4 minutes late.

You know, being on time but then just hanging out, not making a contribution. Being on time, and JUST being on time, is a bit like being an internet grammar nazi....what's the point?

Having said that, yeah, waiting around for someone ALL the time is a balls. Fuck that!

would bernie lomax risk his life to be on time? like would he run across busy roads, ride his bike on the left side of a tipper truck near a corner, accelerate towards amber lights?

a friend was meeting some norwegian colleagues for dinner one evening and arrived at the restaurant a bit early to find them all huddled outside in the pissing rain waiting for it to be time to go in

change all the clocks in your house by 3-4 minutes. You'd be amazed at how effective it can be.

i recently fell out with someone over their shitty time keeping/flaky behaviour. not once but twice he asked me to go to a gig then didn't show up. most of the time he'd show up at least 45 minutes late for when we were supposed to meet. unacceptable.
