that's a fucking horrendous idea, who the fuck is at the reins?
now I'm biased because Dee is one of my closest friends, but still who has decided that people want to listen to essentially an iTunes playlist at the weekend?

Phantom is dire.Simply dire.Whoever playlists the thing is in need of an ear transplant.

So a little birdy tells me that Phantom are wiping out the entire weekend evening staff. Well the more obscure shows and replecing them with pre recorded shows from the boring morning and afternoon shows.

Great work phantom, I can safely say I will never listen to you once this happens.

Sunday morning coming down with Pearl - GONE.
James Byrne - GONE
Dee Reddy -GONE
Derek Byrne - GONE
Shane Galvin (?)- GONE

EDIT:
Not sure about any Tim O'D - think he might be saved.

I'm guessing it's a cost saving measure. But to be honest the little slice of phantom that was worth listening to is no longer with us.

I'd urge you all to tune in the last few weeks and bid a fond farewell to some great music and some great people. I'll update this as i hear more.

Pearl gone???

I think I just heard the screams of thousands of shut-in, sensitive boys crying out in unison.

You're not fucking wrong.

a terrible end to the phantom history.

i was listening to a quality soul show on dublin city fm yesterday evening, really really good. plus i won a baseball cap off the livedrive crew.

K-ROCK surely?

cunts.

Going with the US call letters by the looks of things.

I'm pretty sure there's a 4-character limit. There's a big rock station in LA with the same call sign.

Everything east of the Mississippi starts with a W, like WXRP in New York.

Although it doesn't sound like the name change is happening. Just the increased crapification.

this is worse than when dcr went under.

I don't really see the problem here. Most of the djs are annoying as hell and they play the same 20 songs on the station's predetermined playlist. Any time some one texts in or asks for a song that's not on that playlist they say, "We don't have that here maybe next week...." and it's never obscure requests. There are no interesting stories or tidbits they just waffle on about nonsense; itunes on shuffle could do a better job most days. The only dude that has a good show (and seems to put some thought into it) is the guy after midnight on Saturdays. I think he's in a local band but can't remember his name.

Shitty radio might get shittier. Oh well.

A bit harsh! Midnight Saturday is James Byrne - owner of Any Other City Records. Great show.

Also good on Phantom: I dip in and out to most of them
Nadine O'Regan's Kiosk: Saturdays 11.00am: Arts
Pearl: Sunday Morning 11.00am: Quiet stuff
Tim O'Donovan: Fridays and Saturdays 7.00pm - 11.00pm: Dance/ Eectronic/ Re-Mixes/ Mash ups etc. It's good!
Jim Carroll: Tuesdays 10.00pm
Cathal Funge - From time to time - makes an effort to avoid the Playlist

Morning has too much loud laughter and daytime is hellish. If they are determined to knock the specialist shows on the head, that will be that.

I don't think it's too harsh. I bought a radio about a year and half ago and listened to my fair share of Phantom. I could give my thoughts on every show/dj but I won't because that would be harsh to single out. As a collective whole, it's not any different than other stations except that they play the bands that will be at big summer festivals that I would skip anyway. It's basically the same format as any other station 90 percent of the time. Play the playlist and throw in a couple of your own choices and those choices are normally predictable. At least that James Byrne has a playlist of his own and has come up with things to say about the songs/artists beforehand. Not just shit someone just posted on facebook. At least you can learn from his show and hear tunes you wouldn't hear anywhere else. The new 'branding' is not really a change, in my opinion.

Fair point! The continuity type presentation style of most of the daytime shows is mind-numbing alright.

Okay this might be harsh but I can thank Phantom for one thing, soundtracking my piss poor mood this year. It's like when I was stuck in hospital for over a week a few years ago. People brought me movies, books and my ipod. I never wanted to absorb any of it despite being bored outta my mind because I would always associate it with being trapped there. Phantom provided me with the perfect soundtrack of things I would never want to hear again. It's all merged together into some passionpitgoytedjangodjango background noise. Thanks Phantom, now I'll take a walk.... ;)
