what a tenth rate joke Cornu ! you're losing your edge.

Considering how ill he was 15-20 years ago Maradona was never going to live to old age.

Claudio Gentile fouled Maradona 23 times in 1982 World Cup match and wasn't sent off.

Somehow Diego got booked before Gentile did.

What he did at Napoli was maybe even bigger than the '86 World Cup,
which even aside from Maradona was probably the best World Cup in
the last 50 years.

Also sorry to hear of Maurice Setters' passing as a result of... Alzheimers

Gentile would have seen red after 15 minutes if that match was played nowadays.
I agree that the Napoli success was even greater than winning the World Cup. With the World Cup win, he had a team of good players to support him, but with Napoli, he basically took a bunch of nobodies to the club's first scudetto ever and their first trophy in 25 years. The only modern player to have as big an effect on one city is Messi (although fair play to Totti at Roma), and even then the Messi effect is nothing compared to Maradona in Napoli.

It's demented to watch footage of him. Playing at the highest level on earth round people also there for their world beating talents and he's running round them like traffic cones, the ball running with him like a puppy he raised.

more Maradona trivia:
he won 152 free kicks at World Cups, Jarzinho is the second most fouled player on 64.

Maradona dies: His World Cup stats which may never be matched

Maradona was the fouled player in three World Cups:
36 times in 1982, 50 times in 1986 and 53 times in 1990.

Maradona: A Legend’s World Cup Exploits In Numbers - Stats Perform

Osvaldo Ardiles was the most fouled player in the 1978 WC - 32.
In 1982 the coach Menotti got Ossie - as the most sensible hombre in the squad- to look after Diego.
the duo went off for a long drive in the mountains one day during the pre tournament camp and
took so long to come back the coach staff got really worried - but nothing more exciting happened
than the two guys going into a church they found.
shortly before the Mexico '86 Diego famously played in Ardiles' testimonial for Spurs v Inter who
featuring Brady.

another thing that came up in Ardiles' autobiography -
if Maradona had been in the 1978 World Cup squad (aged 17) no one over here would
have ever heard of Ricardo Villa as Ricky was given his spot in the squad at Diego's expense.
