People Who Died (10 Viewers)

I never heard of him until he died
Me either. I’ve never watched a basketball game in my life - the closest I’ve come to that is playing NBA Jam on the Sega MegaDrive when I was 10. You may as well have said that the god of tiddlywinks is dead.

And I haven’t a clue who any of those footballers are either. Sports celebrities are waaaaaay down on my list of people I have any interest or knowledge about. I’d much rather go out and kick a ball around with some oul fellas on an Astro pitch than sit in and watch some pricks do the same on TV.

yeah, sport is superfluous.
if you don't like sport (especially pro sport) you are better off.

HOWEVER (score settling coming here) many people mentioned in this thread
are to my mind are far less noteworthy.
especially a lot of TV people and actors.
most TV shows are worthless and the hollywood movie genre overwhelmingly
has to be the lowest form of art i can think of.
'the (corporate) spectacle'.
this has no more to do with DIY / independent music than sport does.

Lionel Messi has to be more talented than Brad Pitt or Julia Roberts.

why aren't actors worth hundreds of millions subject to the same standards
of worthiness ?
the folks who put on a play in bogger towns around ireland annually are
often better actors than John Wayne, Ernest Borgnine or Yul Brenner (who all won Oscars!).

People of Colour also are far more prominent in sport unless i'm mistaken.

good sport is better than crap 'culture'. i started posting deaths of footballers
and cyclists because they weren't being mentioned much and any half well
known TV personality was.
ultimately every person should decide what they think is important and not
anyone else.

Here a lovely guy telling us how silly sport is (DON'T WORRY HE''S STILL ALIVE):

Chomsky's anti sport arguments also apply to any corporate culture
as far as i'm concerned.

Miguel Arroyo (1966 - 31 January 2020)
90's Mexican cyclist known as ' Little Mig'. (Big Mig was Indurain's English media nickname).
can't think of many Mexicano ciclistas but alongside stars
Raul Alcala (80/90's) and 2000's climber Julio Alberto Perez-Caupio
sat cult climber Arroyo.
in 1988 LeMond noticed him and he then spent three years with Greg
@ ADR and Z (90-91).
Miguel made his Grand Tour debut in the 1989 Giro and went on to
ride 7 Grand Tours inc. the TDF in 1994, 95 and 97.
he never won a race in Europe but 4th in the 1991 Tour de Suisse
(shortly after finishing 25th in the Giro - his best GT result) and two
top ten finishes at the Dauphine (9th in '93 and 7th in '95) were
noteworthy.
Arroyo spent part of the 1994 season at Catavana w/ Kelly ( Sean's
final season as a pro).
Miguel left European cycling in 1997.
he died of heart failure today during surgery having had
longstanding health problems.

Gee willikers

I wonder is there any sense that sports people live longer or die younger than the rest of us?

Crossover was the last record I had by them - Dealing With It was the big one for me, which I don't think he was on - but that's still kind of a biggie

Everyone's fucking dying

Andy Gill 8(

Devastated. Gang of Four were never my Mission of Burma. The impact was more subtle.

Me and a mate interviewed him after some poxy show in 2006. So naive. "But Andy you are a Marxist because..."He was hammered but still ran rings around us. In fairness we were probably stoned out of our tiny brains at the time.

Frequently had Anthrax in my head recently cycling around.

RIP you fucking legend.

i can hardly keep up now.

in the 90's i picked up used copies of GANG OF FOUR records
(when old vinyl was cheap).
the first three 7"s and Entertainment! LP are stunning and still get
a lot of listening with me.
Gill's guitar playing on Armalite Rifle on Damaged Goods - woah!
when they got hip in the last 20 years i never really followed what
they were up to. another band i'll never see live now.

the other Andy Gill (the music journalist) also died not that long back.
strangely they never met until well into the 21st century when the
journo interviewed Andy Go4 for The Independent.

when Josh Pappe was in D.R.I. in the 80's they were a lot of folks
introduction to high speed hardcore and thrash.

the amount of people who have played football for a living @
some stage numbers in the 100,000's which explains all the deaths

Cesar Zabala (1961-2020) Paraguayan international defender
capped 49 times, who played in 1986 World Cup (all four matches
including last 16 defeat to England).

Ilie Barbulescu (1957-2020) Romanian left back.
4 time national champ, who won 5 caps.
in his spell with Steaua Bucharest (1984-87) he was in the team that
shocked football to win 1986 European Cup beating Barca who
famously managed to have all their four pens saved in Final shootout
in Sevilla by Helmuth Duckadam.
