Peter Thompson (1942 - 31 December 2018)
Liverpool and England footballer.

Born in Carlisle, Thompson turned pro with Preston and was signed by Bill
Shankly in 1963 after scoring the winning goal against Liverpool in an
FA Cup tie. Liverpool had just been promoted in 1962 and the £37,000
fee was one the best of many such bargains Liverpool got over the
next few decades.
A quick and skillful left winger (despite being right foot footed) Thompson
won two League titles in 63-64 and 65-66 plus the club's first
FA Cup in 1965.
He rarely missed a match until early 70's when serious knee problems
eventually saw him released by Liverpool in 1973.
(by then Steve Heighway was also excelling on the left wing for Liverpool)
in total he played 416 matches scoring 54 goals for LFC (322 games and
41 goals in the League).
after leaving Anfield he played another 132 matches for Bolton despite having
being advised to retire in 1973. he finally hung up his boots after helping
Bolton to promotion in 1978.

Thompson won 16 caps for England between 1964-70 but was left out
of the 1966 and 1970 World Cup squads after both times being in the
provisional 28 man squads.
also Alf Ramsey after concluding the his wingers (inc. Liverpool's other winger
Ian Callaghan) weren't good enough in the 1966 group stage matches developed
4-4-2 formation (rather than traditional 3-2-5) meaning that wingers like
Thompson had few opportunities to play after the 1966 World Cup.

After football Peter ran a caravan park and later two hotels. after retiring
he lived in Portugal from 2006.

PHIL MASINGA (1969 - January 13th 2019)
South African footballer.

Starting with Jomo Cosmos, Phil then became a prolific
goalscorer at Mamelodi Sundowns.
in 1994 along with his countryman Lucas Radebe he joined Leeds
United but unlike 'the Chief' he struggled, leaving in 1996.
after brief spells at St. Gallen and Salernitana in Serie B he signed
for Bari scoring 20 goals in 47 matches in Serie A in his first
two seasons there before losing his place to Antonio Cassano.
in 2002 he headed to Abu Dhabi ending career in the UAE.

But Masinga will be best remembered for his international career.
he played in South Africa's first post Apartheid match in 1992 versus Cameroon.
Winning the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996 as hosts
(runners up two years later).
and scored against Congo in 1997 to secure 1998 WC qualification
and played in France 98. he scored 18 goals in 58 caps.

he passed away from cancer aged only 49.
