"earned his ring nickname, The Anvil, after winning an anvil throwing contest. "

Jimmy McIlroy (1931- Monday, 20 August 2018)
One of Northern Ireland's greatest footballers also considered Burnley's best ever player.
after joining Burnley from Glentoran in 1950 he spent 13 years at Turf Moor
in attacking midfield role, including becoming English Champions in 1960.
after 497 games and 131 goals he joined Stoke in 1963.
they immediately won promotion in '64 also getting to League Cup Final
beginning Stoke's best era.
he then was player manager with mediocre spell at Oldham (65-'68 - Ken Bates
was chairman) and a very brief time at Bolton.

At international level he won 55 caps (10 goals) between 1951-65. including getting to last
eight of 1958 World Cup in Sweden.
he is an easy choice for any N.I. all-time XI.

after football he remained living in Burnley and a stand built in the 90's at Turf Moor was named after him.
Burnley returning to prominence and having their best season since 60's in 2017-18 was a nice parting gift.

also R.I.P. from a very different field:
Dario Pegoretti has passed away aged 62 (heart attack)
he was a bespoke bike frame builder and designer.
he was of interest because of who rode his bikes and why:
if you don't know him you may well have seen his bikes -
my understanding is that if team issue bikes were not up to scratch
the riders would ask for different bikes -
Pegoretti was the main man to do to approach for the job.
but the bike frame would have the team's regular bike manufacturer
name and paint job and few folks would notice...
Stephen Roche and many Italian big guns (among other stars) rode his bikes back in the day.
later his hand built frames bore his own name and he continued to build
only metal frames when they disappeared from elite cycling.

Lindsay Kemp. I only knew him as The Landlord in The Wicker Man. But it seems he was a big dance man, amongst other things. staged Ziggy Stardust concerts in London back in the day. Both Bowie and Kate Bush were students of his
