Then being chased by Dobermans.
There was comedy to be had.

That said, having a show where a black guy is the most intellectually adept by a distance was a hell of a counter to the stereotypes from before like Stepin Fetchit and their ilk.

I loved Benson. I think I was a little too young for Soap.
