People Who Died (15 Viewers)

Nicolas Portal's death was announced just after 7 pm on Tuesday 3rd March.
i turned on Sky Sports News about 7:15 pm to see how they would
report this and the channel wasn't mentioning it.

i'd be interested to know if Sky UK mentioned this on air at all,
because i've seen no mention of this on any of their channels.

I haven't seen it reported anywhere really, other than on the cycling-specific news sites.

I'm off to get the take of The Clinic on it to see what theories they're coming up with.

And he was so young as well. It just makes you wonder, did his job involve taking a load of substances that over time fuck your organs up, or something like that?

He was a pro rider for 8 years and fuck knows how many years juicing to try and get pro

The silver lining is that maybe Lance Armstrong will die of a heart attack

He retired from racing because of heart problems... I mean, it's possible to have heart issues without doping.

right but there have also been a scattering of young cyclists dying from heart-related deaths, that have been linked to EPO use.

Of course its possible he just had heart problems. But this is where we are. The poor lad croaks it at 40, and its very hard not to wonder.

Emilio Caprile (1928 - 5 March 2020)
Italian footballer who played as a left sided forward for Genoa, Juventus,
Atalanta, Lazio and several smaller clubs.
he played in the 1948 London Olympics scoring a goal in both of his games
(both Olympics appearances count as full caps).
Caprile was also in the 1950 World Cup squad for Brazil but didn't play.

true on both counts.
Nicolas Portal was only with Sky for his final season racing and
already had a diagnosis of a heart problem.
he always came across as the acceptable face of Sky -
a young, affable French guy who unlike dodgy Dave Brailsford
and the sport science crew had actually raced as a pro.
that doesn't absolve him from how the team operated but
it was a smart PR move to have him on the team.

when this happens it's very sad and it's rarer than you would
expect in a sport were the use of blood doping, hormones and
steroids is frequent.

having said that i wouldn't miss Lance either.

Wanderley Machado (1938-2020)
Brazilian football striker who had solid career playing in top two
divisions in Spain as a striker.

part of the reason i'm mentioning him is that his brother Waldo died
last year in 2019 (Alzheimers again) around the same time as Gordon Banks.

i wasn't online here much at the time and i didn't mention either, so.....

Waldo (1934- 25 February 2019) i.e. LAST YEAR
Waldo was a Brazilian international striker (5 caps/2 goals).
he is still the all time top scorer for Fluminense (1954-61) with 319 goals
in 403 games (woah!)

Waldo was equally brilliant in Spain after joining Valencia in 1961, scoring
115 goals in 216 La Liga games (160 in 296 competitive games total).

there he won the European Fairs Cup (aka UEFA Cup aka Europa League)
twice and one Spanish Cup (which was called the Copa Generalisimo
at the time - yuck).
Waldo won the Pichichi Liga top scorer prize in 1966-67 scoring 24 goals.

in 1970 he joined Hercules Alicante (his bros Wanderley's team) and retired
in 1971 after a poor season aged 36.

both Wanderley and Waldo (awesome names) resided in Valencia for the
rest of their lives.

Endurance exercise can be hard on the heart. My father-in-law, a pretty decent amateur cyclist in his day, had atrial fibrillation and died of a heart attack in 2017. His best buddy from them days has some kind of heart thing as well, says all the old cyclists have heart issues
