People Who Died (6 Viewers)

Rip Bob Skavna from The Jollars. Another Irish punk gone far too soon. A great musician and friend to many , esp here on Eirecore. Funeral is today.

A hero and friend of mine, Aidan (I'm not going to give his last name) died a couple of years back.

He was part of the Dublin punk scene in the 70s and 80s, and introduced me to punk, and to what happened in Dublin as punk started there. He was much older than me, in fact the first thing he asked me to look after his daughters (who I was only barely older than, because "I seemed sensible"). He had piles of cassettes in his kitchen that he'd work through; this was his money job, making food. He explained punk to me, he talked me through who was doing what in Dublin. Irish punk and motorbikes. Having a grown-up give a fuck about carefully explaining things like that to a child was something I'd never encountered. He knew everybody, when lads ended up famous they'd still look for favours off Aidan. (He ended up getting me to do some of them because he was really busy: Bob Geldof's Ma is going on holidays, he asked me to look after a few things, would you look after the dog? Bob's ok. He'll give you 40 quid.)

I know people saw punk as frightening and exclusionary, but because of Aidan I realised it was this extremely caring community.

Anyway, Aidan died in Vincent's. The last couple of years of his life seemed quite rough. He was a good person and a good punk ambassador.

Also one of his daughters started a punk band.

sad to hear that, 4AD was a great label in the early days.

Mirko Crepaldi (1972 - 28 December 2019)
Italian cyclist died yesterday of heart attack.
from Veneto (Venice), region Mirko was a gregario who was pro from
1995-2001, all bar the last year with Polti.
he rode 8 grand Tours inc. 4 Tours de France in the service of
Luc LeBlanc and later after Polti shafted Luc (who sued) Richard Virenque.
Mirko finished his career with second division squad DeNardi in 2001.
like many pros he never won a pro race himself.

Un infarto stronca Mirko Crepaldi, ex Polti: aveva 47 anni Gazzetta della Sport (in Italian).
Mirco Crepaldi (extensive career results)

a cyclist dying this young is rare thankfully.
i was desperately worried about this generation twenty years ago but
so far the worst hasn't materialized.

Yeah. I honestly think Frank Vandenbroucke scared a lot of lads back into sanity. People talk a lot about Pantani, I've heard interviews where people mention him as a wake up call. Vandenbroucke was just as awful.

When I was little I'd watch VDB in races, flawless, and understand that sport was beautiful. The way he died has to have had an effect on the other lads.

i remember reading an interview with VDB a few years before he
died which left me holding my head in my hands.
he said he wanted to win some races and then his wife would take
him back (he hadn't won anything for years).
i was terrified for him and wasn't surprised when he eventually died.

there was a major 7 part documentary on Frank broadcast in Belgium
in 2019 lasting over five hours in total.
his eldest daughter Cameron (b. 1999) is featured and her thoughts
closed the final part.
last year she turned pro with Lotto.

Jimenez, Pantani and VDB suffered from doping, cocaine abuse,
mental health issues and in the cases of Marco and Frank legal
issues related to the other problems.

Jose Maria Jimenez died two months before Pantani.
he went from winning 3 Vuelta stages in September 2001 to dying in
December 2003 in hospital apparently having gained a huge amount
of weight in the last two years of his life.
when he disappeared from cycling first we heard he had spent winter
2001 partying, then later that he was being treated for depression
and it gradually became obvious he was going to race again.
but his death came as a horrible shock.

several other riders died about the same time (2003/2004)
a dire period -

Denis Zanette (1970-2003) heart attack, there was a family history.
Andrei Kivilev (1973 - 2003) crashed in Paris - Nice 2003 died next day
Fabrice Salanson (1979 - 2003) 23 year old died in his sleep @ Tour of Germany
Lauri Aus (1970 - 2003) died in training accident in Estonia July 2003

also two other retired riders died in their 30's
Michel Zanoli (1968 - 2003) heart attack.
Stive Vermaut (1975 - 2004) former USP and Lotto rider
retired in 2002 due to heart problems and while out
cycling had a heart attack.

this all added up to something very scary and the last few
years have been the worst time since.
