Onions (1 Viewer)

Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy

Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.

Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or kissogram.

I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.

Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring,
if you like.
Lethal.
Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.

Yum I like the way this turned into a bit of a recipe thread there.
It's not that I hate onions, It's just that I wouldn't eat them raw. I find my tastes have changed as I got older, I like olives, peppers (except the green ones) and all sorts of shit I hated years ago.
I actually don't mind a little raw red onion on a roll or in salad. But I wouldn't put it there on purpose.

Lala, I might try that recipe and see how I feel about onions after it.
Veggie shepards pie = yum
I made one a good while ago with green lentils, carrots, peas, onion, GARLIC, veggie stock cube, herbs (bay leaf, parsley, rosmary i think)
Leave the peels on the spuds, loads of soy milk and marg (stupid vegan housemates) and salt
Amazing.

Marmite is pretty good as a stock type flavourer. It's another one of those things I hated but now like, even on toast.

I love food

I dislike garlic too. I can stand it when it's mild like in a pasta sauce. What puts me off is the smell, it's like primary school toilets.

Most people don't know how to chop an onion right.

< deadly method

the best method is to chop off the tip first, then keeping the onion held together slice down from the tip a few times in one direction, then twist the onion and slice it a few times from the tip in another direction. Then turn the onion on its side and take full slices. Put in pan immediatly or in a bowl and cover. No more tears!
The root holds the onion together, if you take the root off first the onion sort of loosens and the crying juice comes out immediatly.

I've tried every "do this and the onions won't make you cry" trick in the book, and none of them actually work. These days I just put up with it

Just hold your breath and pretend you don't care.
Works for me.

Do they do more harm than good, what with the making the eyes sting and cry?
They are good for ya if you have a cold, but couldn't garlic do that job even better?

They are really healthy and help prevent cancer, lower cholesterol and maintain healthy bones.
See here for these exciting details..

Yeah, it is quite nice. I think it is missing *something* though, when I was eating it last night I put salt on it which is a very rare thing for me to do.

Perhaps a spoon of marmite might make a difference next time.

Spoonful or 2 of Wholegrain mustard perhaps
