North Korea has confirmed for the first time that is has developed nuclear weapons, saying it needs them as protection against US hostility.
The fact that the communist state had developed such weapons has long been public knowledge, but the country has never admitted possessing them.
In a statement today, the North Korean Foreign Ministry said: "We . . . have manufactured nukes for self-defence to cope with the Bush administration's evermore undisguised policy to isolate and stifle [our country]."
Since 2003, the United States, Japan, China, Russia and North and South Korea have been engaged in talks designed to persuade the communist nation to abandon its nuclear programme in return for economic and diplomatic aid.
However, little progress has been made, with North Korea accusing the US of pursuing a hostile policy in the region.
