Friday 29th Oct: Halloween Rave - Fancy Dress Welcome €10 before 12 / €12 after ... Neil Landstrumm (Planet Mu / Tresor - Uk) A fixture of the UK electronic music scene since 1994 Neil Landstrumm has released work on many of the most recognised labels in the industry. Starting with Peacefrog, shifting gears to Berlins’ Tresor Records he then upped the bass-game onto arguably the UKs’ greatest electronic label of the moment, Planet Mu. Neil's first album for Mu "Restaurant of Assassins" saw Landstrumm hijacking varied influences from techno, dubstep, garage and breaks as well as vintage 90s rave and Sheffield sounds. He is an artist who always seems to be at the spearhead of experimental, dancehall low frequency electronics with his Scandinavia label signature. A pioneer of new styles within techno, often copied and imitated Landstrumm has enjoyed a strong pedigree within the electronic scene. The success of Restaurant's ravestep sound led Neil onto a string of sessions for the BBC, a main feature on the German "Slices" DVD and relentless live tour dates all throughout 2009, Landstrumm's 2008 LP on Planet Mu, "Lord for £39", expanded on the steel-city industrial-rave styles set out in his last full-length venture "Restaurant of Assassins". Lord for £39 simply put is about being a baron on the cheap. With several cameos from such stately artists as Carlton Killawatt, Ebola and Si Begg, the vibe is "Imperial British Bass Psychedelia" and all it's stylish bleepy trimmings. Freshly imported southern-fried krunk, and sweet island dancehall are mixed with the refreshed roots of UK rave, steppers, grime and garage to brew an addictively low frequency elixir. Cult analogue gear and digital production techniques meet in the Witness Rooms to a useful and sovereign effect. Autumn 2009 also saw the mini LP project "Bambaataa Eats His Breakfast" again released on Mu. A psychedelic 8 track minimal album that wires together dubstep and grime’s modes and fx with a penchant for 8-bit melodies, brick-a-brack percussion and a touch of rave’s rude energy. Landstrumm's live show weaves British electronic heritage into a thoroughly modern bass experience. Currently signed to Cloaks label 3BY3, they released their debut album, Corrupt My Examiner, in April 2010 to critical acclaim. They are one of the few acts to successfully merge dubstep with heavy industrial sounds and make it work on the dancefloor. They never fail to impress when performing live and are possibly the loudest electronic live act ever known! “It’s playful but sick. Like a puppy with extremely sharp teeth” – Justin K Broadrick (Jesu/Godflesh) http://www.discogs.com/artist/Dead+Fader http://www.facebook.com/deadfader http://www.myspace.com/deadfader Warren Knowles (Electric Underground)

In 1989, Grant Wilson-Claridge started DJ-ing at a club located just along the coast from Newquay, Cornwall. Called the Bowgie - Cornish for cattle shed - the venue seems at first sight an unlikely place to inspire the birth of Rephlex records, a label recently dubbed by NME “the coolest record label in the world”.

Wilson-Claridge explains that he and Aphex Twin used to DJ on alternate weeks. He was intrigued by the music Aphex Twin was playing and on closer inspection discovered that he was not playing records but rather his own tapes. On noticing this, Wilson-Claridge suggested that they press up some records. In the beginning, committing Aphex Twin’s recordings to vinyl was a way of making music he and his friends wanted to hear. Due to their geographical dislocation they did not have access to the music they wanted to hear and so they decided to create their own. “We were doing it for a laugh” explains Grant, “We’re still doing it now”.

Indeed they are. Having attracted a following in Cornwall, early Aphex Twin tracks like Analogue Bubblebath and Didgeridoo were picked up by London stations like Kiss FM. Soon the artist was the object of popular and critical admiration outside Cornwall, and the fledgling Rephlex label took the decision to move to London in 1992.

In spite of this, Rephlex has not allowed one figure to dominate. The label which set out with the intention to fill “a void in the country’s dance music” has carried on this mission bringing out releases by artists like The Bug, DJ Scud and Rephlex old-timer Cylob. Rephlex has also attempted to bring to the fore lost classics, their recent re-issues of 808 State’s classic Newbuild and the Humanoid Sessions 84-88 being prime examples. The label has also sought out artists from far and wide.

For Rephlex it’s simple, according to Wilson-Claridge, “everyone was talking about Sheffield and Detroit and Chicago as places where interesting music was happening, we just thought it would be funny to do it with Cornwall”.

The Person (Sony Higher Ground, Acroplane, Alkalinear)
...
The Person (Alex Lennon) has been producing music for over 17 years. Starting out in Dublin in the early 90s, Alex was signed to Sony Higher Ground producing everything from hip hop, techno to IDM and drum n bass. He played live across Ireland and the UK back in the days when there wasn't a computer in sight.

He then spent a year in new york mixing beats for upcoming hip hop artists and playing jazz piano from one end of NY to the other. Alex moved to paris to start a new studio producing music with musicians from all over france and north africa. In 2003 he moved the studio back to ireland to start a new project with Liam O'Brien named "Leechrum Nights". Here he was booking and playing with some of the biggest names in electronic music, and leechrum nights became part of the SAI festival, which brought some of the best acts from Ireland and around the world together in a field in Leitrim!

For the last 2 years Alex has been mastering and mixing releases for many different artists and record labels across europe and later this year is planning on releasing an album and a selection of ep's on several different labels including the Irish labels Acroplane and Alkalinear.

The person is no stranger to mashing up the dance floor so expect lots of b-boy style breaks, acid, electro, techno and beyond all mixed, remixed and tweaked out as only The Person knows how.
