My sister's looking for a cheap laptop for college.
Probably needs to be Windows machine with MS Office for compatibility's sake.

Her birthday's coming up so we might all chip in & get her one.
Where should I be looking?

Yeah, can't find much in the laptop department below €350 on any of the Irish shops' websites.

Found Office for €65 though, which is good although I'm not sure if it would work on Windows 7 Starter which a netbook would be running?

I'd say avoid a netbook as well, screens are way too small to be usable especially if she's going to be typing out essays and whatnot. Go for a 13" laptop.

got it on a netbook in work for someone & it lasted about 3 hours before it was replaced with XP

when your OS won't even let you change the desktop background you know you're in trouble.

Agree - defo need a respectable screen and key size if she needs to do typing work. my own sis cant work on her netbook, she had to opt for a ten year old pc cos the keys were too fiddly.

If all you're doing is typing a few essays and a bit of onliniing is all this extra twaddle really necessary?

My first Laptop had 512mb of RAM & a 10gb hard drive & I was fucking video editing on it(!)

If you need a cheap laptop, just get a cheap laptop.

I told my sister about all the concerns raised here about how shit netbooks are.
From what I can tell she basically wants a netbook, will probably rarely use it for anything other than checking Facebook.
She's doing nursing & only has about 6 months left so the amount of college work is probably negligible.
I've decided to just give her money towards it & let her buy whatever piece of crap she wants cos I don't want to get the blame when it breaks!

She can also get MS Office cheaper than I can cos she's a student.
