I was going to hijack the "albums you completely missed" thread but maybe this is just too big...

That band Living In A Box - I never occurred to me it was about homeless people until I watched this video a minute ago

It cuts from the the homeless people to the band dancing around in spandau ballet suits and haircuts. Bit naff.

WOW!

I too never ONCE copped that was what this tune was about homelessness.I though it was about a middle class bloke living in a metaphorical box

Amazing

If you did not know your history of the Be My Baby Beat until now here is the response I was gonna give @Jim Daniels in the other thread there:

That was a great track alright. Be My Baby drums an' all..

There's a huge history behind that beat, it's really interesting or tremendously dull depending on who you are:

apparently it all comes from this Brazlian baion song in this scene

Leiber and Stoller saw the film and started using the beat when writing songs. Their big breakthrough with it came when they added strings with this song:

As they were pretty much the kings of commercial song-writing at the time it ends up all all over pop songs in one way or the other for the next few years, usually mixed in with whatever else was happening.

Eventually Phil Spector (who started off apprenticed to Leiber and Stoller) got to it. Starting right back with There's No Other Like my Baby

if you follow his single releases from there you can really see how he slowly closes in on the beat.....

He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)
to
He's A Rebel
to
Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah
to
Why Do Lovers Break Each Others Hearts
to
(Today I Met) The Boy I'm Gonna Marry
to
Then He Kissed Me

and finally Be My Baby.

I should probably write a PHD on this nonsense.

I've known this song for years (about 20 to be precise) and never knew what it was about until last year.

I forget the girl's name but it was something that happened in/near Athlone in the 80s where a girl who became pregnant out of 'wedlock' (what an awful term) and who was shunned by her family, went out into a field and had the baby and, I think, both of them died.

Christy Moore had a song about it too called 'In the middle of the island'.

I think this is also about her

I learned this tune in primary school.

It's creepy as fuck.

Son wants to get out of his shitty town and live in the city.

Ma doesn't want him to because she's lonely and can't get her hole.

Fucking hell.

most old traditional Irish songs are about either getting your hole or not being able to get your hole

Yeah granted most songs are about getting/not getting your hole. But manipulative bitch of a mother part ? What the fuck ? Why would you teach kids this drivel ? It's makes the Livia Soprano look like some sort of liberal hippy.
