Only moving a short distance but have a lot of furniture and books to move.

Has anyone used a moving company?

Did you pack everything up yourself or get them to do it?

Was it expensive? Was it worth it?

Any recommendations?

I've always just rented a truck/van and done it myself (in the states). The idea of a moving company sounds so decadent but if I ever had the money I would have preferred it. Moving blows hard. I know (in the states) it's cheaper if you box everything yourself then they give you a quote. Not sure if I would even like someone to box my stuff because then I wouldn't know where anything was while unpacking.

We used one a few years ago, I just called a few in the Golden Pages and got quotes. Cant remember which one we used, sorry :)
There's a huge difference in cost between the big companies with full page ads and the smaller companies. We boxed everything ourselves, it was cheaper and I was happier doing it nyself.

These have been around for donkeys years I think they moved my parents in stuff in the eighties. Not recommending them personally but just saying.

If you have a licence then rent a van. If not get a mate with a van. That's my recommendation.

Oh use these

I know you can get them somewhere I can't remember where and yes I know you're thinking "it's a box I'm not paying for a fucking box" but trust me on this one they're durable and when boxes fail in transport it's hell.

I couldn't agree more, as someone who has moved/lived in 25+ apartments in the last 17 years! They're durbale, stackable, and most importantly you can't over pack them so they aren't too heavy to lift. Plus easy storage boxes after for things in closets and they break down and assemble easily for any reason in the future. Seems like a silly purchase but it's not.

Where can these be obtained? Anyone know?

Thank you for all the advice folks.

Much as I hate packing stuff I think we'll do it ourselves, as was said, at least that way we know where things are and who broke them :D

You can usually get these for a buck a piece...of course here everything is more expensive. This is the cheapest I've seen them but I only did a quick search. Even if you only got 20 or so....it will help by saving you trips because they are all uniform size thus stackable and have handles....especially if you have loads of cds and books.

ETA: Plus no need for tape and the time it takes to get it off the damn roll if you're anything like me. Frustrating as all hell.

You should be able to hire something like these from a professional moving company at a decent rate.
They are larger and sturdier than the cardboard boxes and you are not left with a bunch of empty boxes after the move.
They are, in short, the mutt's nuts.

Obviously, like everything else, cheaper and easier in the States.

Like I said I can't remember but if memory serves we got our somewhere weird we tried loads of hardware and DIY shops and eventually got them in an office supply shop I think. Actually I think it was on Camden street. I could be totally wrong there moving week your brain goes bananas.

You get the boxes in office supply places and you get the crates from hire a crate.

I can help you if you end up hiring a van, I've a lot of experience in moving furniture and other stuff and a lot of free time.

I am probably going to be moving abroad soon, permanently, and I have a lot of vinyl (about 500 records or so) which I would like to bring with me. Does anyone have any experience of shifting it? Is there any company out there that makes boxes that will suit packing and moving the vinyl?

Any advice is much appreciated.

How are you travelling boat or plane? if it's plane you'll probably need a padded flight case, well depending on the airline. If it's Ryanair you might as well just smash the shite out of your records now and save yourself €40 or whatever they charge to check in fragile items these days.

EDIT here's music stores solutions but they seem to only hold about 50 records
