This is why we're going with hypnobirth. When you think about it, and read something like that, it actually makes a lot of sense.

it really does - it sounds brilliant - well done on the choice - i hope to hear about how ye get on (and i'm sure i will now we have the Parenting Board:))

really though - fair play. i have a friend who is pregnant for the second time, had the standard hospital experience first time around and wants to try hypnobirthing this time. but as soon as she mentioned it to her partner she was shot down with something like "no way, you're not a hippy!". there is a definate social stigma about anything that sounds too kooky or way-out.. but it's essentially trying to take control of your body and mind without having to rely too heavily on drugs/others.
i'm for it!

Good article shine, fair play to you
I have to say the the Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda is now pretty good. They have a midwife-led unit, one of the lowest epidural rates in the country, and they have specialist breastfeeding nurses - the midwives are very well-up on natural birth and are aware of all the different positions and they even have birthing stools (kinda like potties) in the delivery rooms, supposed to be one of the easiest ways to give birth
Mrs. egg_ didn't get to try most of this out though, seeing as she got sick and the baby went into distress and came out via emergency C-section ... and it transpires that the Lourdes have a very high percentage of births by section ... and the breastfeeding nurses aren't as brilliant as you'd hope they'd be ... and the hospital could have been a lot cleaner. Judging by other peoples' experiences though I think it's got an awful lot to recommend it

There's a good review of a book called BIRTH:A History by Tina Cassidy's in the Sunday Times yesterday.

Lots of weird and wonderful stories including the story of a "South American tribe in which the woman in labour will tie a cord around the father's testicles and yanks hard every time a contraction comes on". Also, birth is described as being akin to "forcing a grapefruit out through your nostril".

Seems like an interesting read but not recommended for the soon-to-give-births out there.

Holy shit! What do they do if it's a Caesarean?

Just like Total Recall.
