there are ten of thousands of people in Ireland who could do what Tubridy does better.
the worst thing is he's completely oblivious to his mediocrity - the twit thinks he's indispensable.

No fan of Tubs but given that he isn't the worst broadcaster in the country, meaning there are people who really want to do that job for a living and have worked hard at it and he's better than they are I think that's a bit of an overestimation.

Talking comfortably on camera is a much more difficult skill than people assume. I couldn't do it, even without my speech impediment.

out of interest who is worse in Ireland?
he's a total lightweight and the type of broadcasting he does shouldn't exist.
so maybe that's just what's required for something I don't care for?

Michael Parkinson, Jonathan Ross, Russell Harty or Graham Norton probably have a rare talent but Tubridy is not even close to their level.

Ant and Dec are far more likeable as far as light entertainment goes.

Do you spend much time listening to local radio?

Pretty much every broadcaster RTE gives a run out to on the Saturday night chat show slot is worse at it than Tubs, if they weren't they wouldn't be rotating through them to see what sticks. Kenny had that slot for 11 years before he got the late late, Tubs had it for 5.

Yer man who anchors sport for TV3, he stinks. So does Martin King.

the main soccer presenter off TV3 has become OK but that took a long time.
Martin King doesn't take himself seriously nor does anyone else.
Des Cahill would be the first to admit he doesn't have a clue how had a career on TV.
Miriam is crap and also even more crap at political stuff.

let's give Marty Morrissey a chat show. Fanning does decent interviews and will tell people if doesn't like
their movie or record.

I have heard people on local radio are who better than Tubridy despite hearing little of it.

now maybe it's just the case the standards in Irish broacasting recruitment are pretty low?
it's not too much ask for things in Ireland to be up to international standard but few things are.

honestly where i work i see about 3-4 graduates a year well up to a presenting job. These are ivory towers in the commercial world and they aren't gonna give THAT salary to and OUTSIDER now are they? But on the question of talent, in this country, yes, yes there are

does anyone actually like Ryan Tubridy?
a petition to get him sacked would be popluar.

an RTE programme about swearing had a clip of Tubridy spilling something on TLLS and saying "fuck".
the best part was it was looked like it was on the Toy Show.
I can't stand him. I don't know anyone who would admit that they can.

I always imagine there's an innate acceptance in Ireland that whoever RTE throw at us, must be good or else they wouldn't be there. Kinda like not questioning the pope being infallible.

I have older relations who often tell me things as if they're statement of fact because they read them in the papers, without even questioning it.

I think its the same thing with Tuperty. Stick Dustin the turkey on the Late Late as presenter and no one will question it .

i don't like tubridy; just find him irritating so i never listen to his show, to the point where i've no real concept of how good or bad he can be. but what i can't fathom is how he earns so much. well, i know or can guess how it has happened, but it's just a headscratcher as to how it was him who managed to get to the point where he was considered the cream of the crop.

Fanning is a terrible interviewer who makes no attempt to really listen to his interviewees. He rambles on about something for 90 seconds and then puts a question mark at the end

And seriously lads, just think for a second about how this stuff works. Why do you think Tubs has a good radio slot, and a good tv slot? It's because people like him. Don't you know any normal people? Fucking zillions of them are willing to tune in to listen to the guy. If he wasn't getting good numbers they wouldn't be able to sell ads, and it wouldn't be long before he "decided to move on". They're always rotating people in and out of radio and tv slots, and you can bet your arse that if one of those attracted more viewers/listeners than Tubs they'd get the prime spots pretty fucking quick

(... though having said that they're not gonna give Tommy Tiernan the late late, but then his show is a completely different ballgame)

Tubridy is the only mainstream DJ that played this back in the day. So I will give him kudos for that

I always switch channels when his programme starts though.

I think the argument is that people would consume whatever is on in those slots out of habit. Its not like there's a whole lot of choice either. His ratings in those slots are far less than predecessors (source: read it on the internets once).

I liked him back when he had a morning program on 2fm. Though I'm sure the incessant quirkiness would have gotten the better of me, eventually. And, that was when he unleashed the abhorrence that was The Camenbert Quartet, on the world.

Yeah, but if they didn't like him in particular they'd change the channel and listen to someone else. I betcha not near as many people listen when he's on his hols

some people will just watch or listen to anything that comes on TV/radio.
there isn't a lot of choice on Irish radio and all non RTE specialist stations have failed.

I pretty much never listen to radio voluntarily (not including podcasts) except very rarely to listen to a match so I am not their target audience. I often hear radio as background noise though.

playlisting hits we've all heard hundreds of times is lowest common demoninator broacasting.
Dave Crouse from A House used to do a show where he'd play non single tracks off well known LPs - a simple idea that worked well.

It works. It makes them money. Other people have tried other things and those things have failed. It's not RTE's fault, what we have is what the people of Ireland want out of the options that are available

Obvs there might be other options that nobody has tried that people would like more (the unexpected success of the TT show is an example of that). BBC Radio 1 is a bazillion times better than any Irish radio station, but they're free from commercial considerations while no Irish radio station is

The RTE News channel had an advert at 1:30 pm today for Ireland's women playing Georgia on RTE 2 tonight at 6:30 pm.
Strangely I had a premonition that I was watching RTE last night and Ireland won 11-0!
