Dear diary.
This weekend I was mostly enjoying Rode NT2a's.
Large diaphragm, switchable patterns and handy pad on the mic..
Sounded nice and big on toms.
Also Audix D6 - pretty cool on kick drum this.. nice boom and good beater slap without ending up in Lars Ulrich clickyland.

nt2a is a lovely all round mic.
use two for a seriously awesome big stereo sound!

I like those audix mics, i've the D4, D2 and adx50. The D4 was their kick drum mic before they brought out the D6, not nearly as much of a low end bump on it.
by the by, anyone ever built one of those kick drum mics using a speaker?
I keep threatening to build one, but haven't got around to it.

a mate of mine did. he absolutly loves it. from what he said its not that difficult to do.

I think I have an old hi-fi speaker and a shitty DI lying around that'd be perfect for this.
It's just wire up the two speaker terminals to a guitar cable, right?

Sure the DI is an impedance matching thing to get the signal to your mic pre in the right shape I thought.
Mind you, Wagener says he just go straight in to the pre, so I'm sure it's no big deal.
It'd be nice to have one of those yamaha subkick dudes, if only because it'd be easier to bring to studios than a frankenstein diy jobby.
Maybe I'll just make one for each studio I use and get them to stash it in the jacks or something.

SM7s are very nice on snare.
Beyer M160 and M88 make a lovely mix on guitar amps.
Sennheiser MD441s are good on toms, and have really good isolation with that auld hypercardiod pattern.

Sennheiser MD441s

did you buy one of these?

out of sheer "we have nothing else" one of these gotten thrown on a kick at an old Capratone demo session, sounded amazing, about a foot out, lots of roomy boom without too much low end flab, always fancied one ever since

meant to be comparable to an SM7 on vox, which can't be a bad thing

yeah I think so, AFAIK it's a dynamic mic with a range and sensitivity comparable to an LDC. Folks on Tape Op go nuts for them.

The prick for RHCP uses one in the studio. Also I'm pretty sure on the Wilco DVD Jeffery is singing into one on some scenes

Nah, used 'em at a studio.
Lovely they are.
I'll have to check 'em out on other bits next time. Could be cool on snare.

SM7 is also the James Hetfield vocal mic.
Rockin'.
