Mic questions (1 Viewer)

Neumann messed around with the original KM84i and added a top end boost that ruined it and it became the KM184.

They are poles apart as mics.

They did it with all the KM series.

They also did away with the pad.

The KM84 is slightly noisier than the KM184 but it sounds 100 times better.

The rode nt5 is not a bad mic for the price in the small condenser world.

DPAs and earthworks are great from the clinical point of view.

Pretty pricey, though.

oh the 441! excellent all around, versatile like crazy. the 5-way tone switch (from M/music to S/speech) allows a huge variation in sound, it's like a progressive bass roll-off. And since it's hyper-cardioid(quite narrow) in it's pick-up pattern, you get more low-end boost the closer it is to the source. Combine the 5-way switch with little adjustments in distance, and you can get a great sound on just about anything.

Pretty freakin' durable too, though like the 421(wider cardioid pattern and different casing), it uses a weird, totally proprietary clip to screw it on a stand. The clips are plastic, fairly fragile, and stoopid expensive to replace.

All that said, this is my 'desert island' mic. And geez, you can make it omni-directional just by covering all the grillwork (except the very top flat bit)with painter's tape. DON'T use gaffa tape as it'll leave goo plugging up random bits when you take it off...

Red(tape)Menace- dang it now I'm wondering what I can sell to buy another 441!

kind of a holy trinity of desire right there.

speaking of dynamics, tried out a sennheiser e935 a few weeks ago, pleasantly surprised how well it worked on a vocal recording.

quick question...

I have my new akgc535ab condensor mic plugged into my mixer...I'm running the TAPE OUT into my soundcard...

Is this correct or should I be using the MAIN OUT's?

How so?

Seroius Q.

Or does it matter as long as I'm happy with the signal.....

Well,I've tried both and the tape out defo seems clearer and brighter...

Its an FBT thing..its Italian, super quiet nice preamps, they went for 4 or 5 hundred I think,I got it for 25!...
